Benefits Director oversees the development, implementation, administration, and maintenance of benefits programs, policies, and procedures. Ensures programs are chosen to be equitable, meet employee needs, comply with legal requirements, and to be cost effective. Being a Benefits Director establishes practices for evaluating existing benefits programs against peer organizations to determine competitiveness, trends and developments. Makes high-level decisions to modify existing benefits programs or institute new ones. Additionally, Benefits Director requires a bachelor's degree. May require Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS). Typically reports to top management. The Benefits Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Benefits Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Job Summary

    The Benefits Manager is responsible for directing, planning, and executing the day-to-day operations of group benefit programs (medical, dental, vision, STD, LTD, voluntary plans, HSA, 401(k) retirement plan, wellness). This role requires someone who is flexible, willing to take on administrative tasks as well as project work. Additionally, this “hands on” role provides excellent customer service, assists in investigating new benefit programs and improves existing programs, and executes administration of benefit plans.


    Job Responsibilities

    • Serve as primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators.
    • Overall day-to-day administration of group benefit programs.
    • Open enrollment planning and administration.
    • Assist employees with benefit elections, filing claims for leave of absence programs including but not limited to disability and FMLA.
    • Develop communication tools to enhance understanding of the company’s benefit package. Design, distribute, and maintain materials for benefits orientations, open enrollment, and summary plan descriptions.
    • Coordinate transfer of data to external contacts for services, premiums, and plan administration.
    • Evaluate and revise internal processes to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
    • Document and maintain administrative procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable government regulations. Ensure timeliness and accuracy of required reporting and fees.
    • Coordinate daily benefits processing.
    • Perform plan audits.
    • Review both short- and long-range cost estimates/projections and relevant statistical analysis regarding modifications in benefit programs and implementation of new programs.

    Education

    Bachelor’s Degree in Business or HR or equivalent combination of education and experience.


    Qualifications and Experience

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • High level of organizational skills, confidentiality, and integrity.
    • 3 years of benefits administration experience preferred.
    • Strong analytical skills and a thorough knowledge of plan designs. Ability to understand, evaluate, and make sound judgement on proposals.
    • Knowledge of benefits contract language.
    • Knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements, both adopted and pending, affecting benefits programs including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, Medicare, Social Security, and DOL requirements.
    • Ability to work as a team with tact and diplomacy, as well as independently.
    • Flexibility, multitasking, excellent judgement, attention to detail and follow through are required.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office (MS Outlook/Calendar, Work, Excel).
    • Experience managing benefits in a Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
    • Knowledge of federal and state HR laws.
    • Strong analytical skills and consultative abilities are required.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, peers, managers, and across departments.

    This position has 1 direct report.


    Work Environment

    This job generally operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment is low.
