  • JOB DESCRIPTION : PRIMARY PURPOSE :

    PRIMARY PURPOSE :

    Support the implementation of the District’s pk-12 counseling program in alignment with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs as well as other state and district requirements.

    Assist in the evaluation of effectiveness of performance of counselors and provide staff development to enhance counselor skills and knowledge.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

    Support in the implementation of the guidance curriculum, including providing instructional coaching to counselors as they provide direct student instruction under the MISD instructional model.

    Review and approve instructional materials for district use within the guidance and counseling curriculum. Conduct onsite instructional rounds to monitor guidance instruction.

    • Assist with the development and implementation of the counseling department’s strategic plan. Support the Counselor Advisory Committee to assist in the development of counselor leaders across the district.
    • Provide support to counselors as they respond to student mental health needs. Maintain current knowledge of community resources and share as appropriate.
    • Support the campus teams as they respond to threats. Train counselors on best practices for postvention techniques including placement in a small group, referral to community agencies, and follow up coordination when the student is referred for additional school-based services such as a 504 plan.
    • Support the IMPACT counseling program and coordinate the telebehavioral health program.
    • Coordinate with outside partnerships such as Texas A&M Commerce / Harold Murphy Counseling Center to deliver counseling services.
    • With the support of the elementary lead counselors, supervise the elementary cadre meetings to provide a job-embedded professional learning community for elementary counselors.
    • Assist in training and mentoring new counselors. Coordinate the counselor intern program.
    • Serve on the district counselor team that is deployed during crisis situations such as the loss of a student, a natural disaster or other crisis event.
    • Assist elementary and middle school students in the transition from DAEP to the regular campus. Provide training to counselors that will provide follow up care to students.
    • Support the middle school implementation of Naviance, including facilitating the 8th grade CTE tours and 8th to 9th grade transition.
    • Assist in the development of the middle school academic planning guide and registration materials. Support the district AVID program, with particular emphasis on helping retain enrollment in AVID from middle to high school.
    • Guide the planning process for transition from 5th to 6th grade, including guidance instruction, parent events and student orientation programs.
    • Support campus staff in the use of the student information system including appropriate scheduling, reporting, and student coding, as related to registration, counseling, and scheduling data.
    • Assist with district level post-secondary advising, CCMR publications, and planning events, such as College Week, College Night and Career Night.
    • Assist the Director in facilitating the counselor training calendar including meetings for the pk-12 team. Remain current in best practices for guidance and counseling and provide professional development for all counselors, including on legal and ethical responsibilities.

    Be knowledgeable of state and local policy and instruct counselors in updated and new policies, including student health and safety.

    • Have a working knowledge of graduation requirements, performance acknowledgements, state course identification, and course credit and transcription.
    • Work with campus staff and provide training on child abuse, suicide prevention, and grief-response and crisis intervention.
    • Provide professional development on social and emotional learning to a variety of audiences, including administrators and teachers.
    • Network and communicate with content coordinators and administrators to collaborate and share current best practices.
    • Participate in community activities that foster rapport and mutual respect between the District and the community.
    • Complete other duties as assigned.

    ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); coordinate district functions; ability to problem solve, to work collaboratively with others and to work on multiple projects / tasks within a given period of time.

    EVALUATION :

    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board Policy on Evaluations.

    PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE :

    Three years of experience as a classroom teacher

    Three years of school counseling experience

    Counseling experience at different levels (preferred)

    REQUIREMENTS :

    Education / Certification :

    Master’s degree in Counseling from accredited university Counselor Certification

    Principal, Mid-management and / or Supervisor certification (preferred)

    Licensed Professional Counselor (preferred)

    Special Knowledge / Skills :

    Strong organizational, communication, public relations, interpersonal, and presentation skills

    Knowledge of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and experience in implementing counseling programs in the school setting

    Knowledge of academic advising for transitioning between levels, special populations, and graduation requirements and postsecondary planning

    Knowledge of best practices in crisis and threat response, including mental health and safety planning

    Knowledge of best practices in social and emotional learning supports, including parent education programming

    Knowledge of instructional coaching and curriculum design (preferred)
