    Description

    ESA is seeking variable part-time (on-call) field biologists with 5 years' experience in the San Francisco Bay Area, vicinity of Sacramento, Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, Central Valley, or within 2-3 hours and willing to travel. The need for part-time on-call services is expected to be greatest in late summer through fall 2024 with periodic work throughout other parts of the year.

    Who You Are

    Qualified candidates should have previous compliance monitoring experience and demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of biological monitoring on small to large, complex construction projects. General experience with wildlife and vegetation species from the geographic area of work: California Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area.

    Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience surveying, handling, and monitoring for, or with monitoring approvals by state and federal agencies for one or more of the following species: San Joaquin kit fox, salt marsh harvest mouse, California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, Western pond turtle, San Francisco garter snake, giant garter snake, Alameda whipsnake, Ridgway's rail, California black rail, Swainson's hawk and/or other nesting birds, and Crotch's bumble bee. Successful candidates will fulfill the following duties:

    • Perform biological compliance monitoring and reporting at active construction sites to ensure conformance with mitigation/permit requirements.

    • Conduct special-status species surveys and nesting bird surveys

    • Identify and relocate sensitive species, when needed

    • Effective verbal and written communicate with senior ESA staff, construction crews, project personnel, and project management staff

    • Maintain written daily written monitoring and inspection logs, including utilizing electronic data collection tools, such as Fulcrum and Trello

    • Enter data into an on-line GIS mapping application, such as ArcMap, Collector, Survey 123

    • Deliver worker environmental awareness training to on-site staff

    • Must have own transportation to project sites and a smart phone

    • Staff may need to complete a background check for access to high security areas, such as near railroad lines

    You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, work in all types of weather, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in forested environments, fields, arid lands, along stream banks, and in coastal/intertidal areas. You may be exposed to inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions. Some night and/or weekend work may be required.

    You will participate in compliance monitoring and reporting activities for on-going construction projects; you will work near heavy equipment. You possess a valid driver's license and have experience driving 4WD vehicles off-road.

    ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is $26.26 - 38.08/hr. or $29.71 - 43.08/hr. based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by many factors including an individual's related experience, education, skills, and the city where the applicant lives.
