    This position may be filled as a:

    • Probational Appointment
    • Promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency wide permanent status employees).
     
    Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected.
     
    This position is located in Lafayette, LA.

    The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.  

    LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology.  The Office of Fisheries exists to ensure that aquatic resources are sustainable for present and future generations of Louisiana citizens by providing access and scientific management. This Position is in support of Marine Fisheries as a Coastal Study Area Biologist, is domiciled in Lafayette Parish, and is responsible for collection of fishery independent and dependent data from sampling programs as assigned. Incumbent will conduct field sampling, collect and maintain biological and environmental data, and operate and maintain vessels and sampling equipment. Incumbent will also collect fishery dependent survey data and assist in developing aquatic habitat restoration projects.
    IDEAL CANDIDATE:
    • Knowledge of aquatic organisms, specifically estuarine and marine finfish and shellfish
    • Knowledge of, and experience with, common fishery independent sampling gear, including gill nets, trammel nets, seines, trawls, and oyster dredges
    • Experience with operation and maintenance of outboard powered vessels
    • Good observational and analytical skills
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a team environment
    • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
    • Knowledge of research and statistical methods.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Collects biological and environmental data
    • Enters and reviews data collected from field projects
    • Compiles and analyzes data, and prepares reports of results
    • Assists in the development of aquatic habitat restoration projects
    • Identifies, measures and records species at various life stages caught in sampling activities
    • Operates departmental vehicles and vessels as necessary to accomplish required job duties.
    • Maintains and calibrates equipment
    • Responds to telephone inquiries from the public and news media
    • Sends and receives email correspondence
    • Represents the department to a variety of job-related contacts and agencies
    • Presents resource management information to commercial, recreational, professional, and conservation groups, schools, and local officials
    • Identifies equipment and supply needs, and may be required to purchase supplies, repairs, and/or equipment
    • Inspects facilities and records of permit applicants, and recommend permit issuance or denial.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    A baccalaureate degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries management, animal science, forestry, natural resources, or conservation.
     
    NOTE:
    Examples of non-qualifying degrees are science education (of any discipline), geology, geography, nuclear science, and agribusiness.
     
    NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
    FUNCTION OF WORK:
    To collect, compile, and analyze biological and environmental data.
     
    LEVEL OF WORK:
    Entry.
     
    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    General from a Biologist Manager or Biologist Supervisor.
     
    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    May exercise functional over lower-level staff and/or direct over nonprofessional personnel.
     
    LOCATION OF WORK:
    Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
     
    JOB DISTINCTIONS:
    Differs from Biologist 2 by the degree of independence.

    Conducts field research and investigations to obtain biological samples and data using a variety of professionally accepted techniques.
     
    Evaluates samples by laboratory analysis or organism identification and description; evaluates research data, organizes data, writes reports, plots findings, performs limited statistical analysis, and illustrates relationships of one set of data to another.
     
    Prepares management plans as a consultant to private landowners, breeders, or other groups.
     
    Investigates facilities and records of applicants for permits and special licenses; makes recommendations concerning issuance or denial of licenses.
     
    Presents wildlife management programs and demonstrations to various groups.
     
    Purchases, operates, and maintains data collection and analysis equipment.
     
    Participates as a team member in complex research projects or special investigations of environmental impact assessment and monitoring.
     
    Conducts small, independent, short-term research projects under the general supervision of supervisory personnel.
     
    Maintains frequent public contact regarding general departmental procedures and cooperates with private, state, and federal personnel in routine problem resolution.
     
    Provides technical support for the senior biologist on one or several projects such as design or procedural problems and recommendations for solutions.
     
    Communicates department's biological programs to individuals and groups through outreach and promotion in educational settings.
