    Job Summary
    This is entry-levelprofessional and technical scientific work with responsibility for providingscientific expertise in algal culture. Characteristic duties include collection and evaluation of field andlaboratory biological and aquatic specimens and/or data to make recommendationsto upper-level management for use in management and program decisions. The incumbent works with algae, applyingbatch and semi-continuous production methods utilizing Photobioreactors to harvestalgae feedstock for live feeds, and research purposes. The work involves routineexecution of algal cultivation methods, adhearing to sterile technique, from small-scalecultures through seed train scheme to production of mass culture. Operations may include seed and productionmanagement, analytical methods applied for routing monitoring, healthmanagement, operation of recirculating aquaculture systems, execution ofexperimental protocols, and data collection. Work is performed usingindependent judgement under the supervision of a higher-level biologist,scientist or an administrative or technical superior. Interaction with faculty, staff, and studentson a variety of projects will be required. This is a full-time position that includes a full benefits package. Theposition will be located at the Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center in OceanSprings, MS. The Center is part of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), aunit of the University of Southern Mississippi. The Center is located on theCedar Point campus of GCRL, a 225-acre site devoted primarily to marineaquaculture. The Center currently includes approximately 100,000 square feet ofculture space devoted to live feed, broodstock, hatchery, nursery/growout,laboratory, experimental, and analytical facilities.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Monitoring and maintaining algae cultures from the clean room through scale-up to mass culture while maintaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in laboratory and production areas.
    2. Follows standard operating procedures for algae maintenance and sanitation.
    3. Participates in research projects, investigations, and aquatic/biological studies in which the scope and objectives are established and based on standardized procedures and participates in translating the outcomes and results to form recommendations for management.
    4. Provides detailed records and data entry for monitoring parameters and production data.
    5. Participates in informational, educational and outreach programs and performs other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Master's degree inAquaculture, Marine Science, Coastal Sciences, Biology, Marine Biology, Botany,or comparable discipline and one (1) year of related work experience. A validDriver's License is required.

    Or

    Bachelor'sdegree in Aquaculture, Marine Science, Coastal Sciences, Biology, MarineBiology, Botany, or comparable discipline and two (2) years of related workexperience. A valid Driver's License is required.

    • Proficient use of personal computers and software for word processing, presentation development, databases, and statistical applications.
    • Ability to take detailed directions and work independently or as a team member.
    • Ability to be proactive, resourceful, and self-motivated with excellent organization and time management skills.
