Biomedical Engineering Director directs and coordinates biomedical equipment service operations that provide lifecycle management of biomedical clinical and research equipment including safety testing, repair, maintenance, and user support. Establishes standards and procedures for equipment maintenance, testing, calibration, documentation, and inventory processes. Being a Biomedical Engineering Director provides technical leadership and develops applicable training and resources for medical staff to ensure correct and safe operations of all equipment and devices. Works with vendors to maintain up-to-date information about new products and equipment upgrades. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering Director supports the equipment needs of all specialty areas including Radiology, Clinical Pathology, Cardiology, Respiratory Therapy, and others. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director or head of a unit/department. The Biomedical Engineering Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity.     Assistant Professor (Biomedical Engineering); Position Number 84678; the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) invites applications for a full-time, general funded, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, pending position clearance and availability of funds, to begin approximately August 1, 2024.  
     
    Applicants from all active research areas of Biomedical Engineering will be considered, with particular interest in next-generation diagnostics and digital health innovation. Broadly, the CoE seeks to recruit faculty with research interests aligned with a programmatic need in transformative point-of-care and remote diagnostic technologies for rural, remote, and underserved communities. Areas of special interest include wearables, continuous monitoring, quantitative and computational methods (including machine learning), and other emerging areas within biomedical technology at the forefront of translational medicine. This position is part of the College-wide effort to establish a leading interdisciplinary research team in the field of Biomedical Engineering. The successful candidate is expected to develop an excellent, externally funded research program. There is the possibility of collaborations with other researchers in the College of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences, John A. Burns School of Medicine, the UH Cancer Center, and the UH Center for Indigenous Innovation and Health Equity.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Teach, conduct, and develop assigned undergraduate and graduate courses or seminars, including via various distance delivery modes as required, including courses in the area of biomedical engineering
    • Develop an independent, extramurally funded research program
    • Communicate research work in leading scholarly conferences and leading peer-reviewed journals
    • Supervise independent research and study activities
    • Serve as academic advisor to students
    • Serve on Department, College, and University committees
    • Render service to the professional or lay community that is relevant to the individual's academic specialty
    • Serve on thesis and dissertation committees of candidates for advanced degrees
    • Lead and participate in biomedical engineering initiatives at the University of Hawai‘i and the UH Manoa College of Engineering
    • Perform related tasks as assigned by the Department Chair
    • Support the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students from populations typically underrepresented in Engineering including Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders 
    • Develop research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawaii and/or the Asia/Pacific region
    • Participate in curriculum development activities and initiatives, including efforts towards the development of curricular materials and instructional methods incorporating place-based/Hawaii-based learning to impact biomedical engineering knowledge
    • Learn about and implement Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and/or place-based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture
    • Participate in implementing the Native Hawaiian principles from the UH Manoa Strategic Plan to support becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning within the Department of Mechanical Engineering
    Minimum Qualifications:
    • A doctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or closely related field (All-But-Dissertation, ABD, applicants will be considered; however, Ph.D. is required at start of employment);
    • Strong commitment to teaching and research excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach students from different backgrounds with diverse life experiences and learning styles;
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with others, and engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.; 
    • Ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in biomedical and/or mechanical engineering;
    • Commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
