Biomedical Engineering Director directs and coordinates biomedical equipment service operations that provide lifecycle management of biomedical clinical and research equipment including safety testing, repair, maintenance, and user support. Establishes standards and procedures for equipment maintenance, testing, calibration, documentation, and inventory processes. Being a Biomedical Engineering Director provides technical leadership and develops applicable training and resources for medical staff to ensure correct and safe operations of all equipment and devices. Works with vendors to maintain up-to-date information about new products and equipment upgrades. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering Director supports the equipment needs of all specialty areas including Radiology, Clinical Pathology, Cardiology, Respiratory Therapy, and others. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director or head of a unit/department. The Biomedical Engineering Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Biomedical Engineering Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience.     Position Summary

    Director of Biomedical Engineering is responsible for the enterprise strategic management and vision of the biomedical engineering programs across the clinical and research enterprise at the City of Hope. This role is responsible to think strategically about the implementation of the program, the planning for the future and the effective operation on a day-to-day basis. The leader is responsible to advise the organization on standardization of equipment and ensure smooth processes are put in place to procure, install, and maintain the equipment. In addition, this role will ensure all program elements are continuously compliant with the Joint Commission and any other regulatory agency and lead survey when needed. It will be an expectation that this role will set strategic goals for the department and manage budgetary considerations while continuously evaluating efficiency and opportunity for budget or operational improvements aligned with the organizational direction. This role will be responsible to advise on all technological advancements and lead efforts related to safety, compliance, and technology in conjunction with the Safety, Research, Facilities, and IT departments. Close integration with our IT security and compliance teams to ensure safety and security is effective will be critical.

    Key Responsibilities include:

    Sets the Strategic Vision for the Business

    • Works with leadership to develop long range roadmap and vision for all biomedical and clinical programs with a target on operational excellence
    • Oversees the management of comprehensive services for planning, specification, tracking, shipping, warehousing, installation, inspection and servicing of medical, non-medical and other equipment and support systems necessary to meet requirements of multiple healthcare facilities.
    • Evaluates Asset Life Cycle Management programs and initiates capital prioritization and planning on an ongoing basis.
    • Provides leadership and professional development of the Medical/Research Equipment Planning and Capital Planning Groups consisting of internal medical technology planning staff and external medical equipment planning consultants, logistics coordinators, project managers, analysts and others, as required.
    • Recommends best practices to ensure adequate planning and design is accomplished prior to purchase of any equipment outside of department
    • Possesses an in-depth knowledge of medical/research equipment life cycle costs to strategically generate medical equipment replacement plans and assists in forecasting medical/research equipment related fiscal budgets.
    • Works with IT to evaluate network cyber security and recommend enhancements
    • Serves as a key member of the Enterprise Capital Governance Committee
    • Responsible for developing capital equipment strategic initiatives including standardization, utilization, aggregation and cost savings initiatives.
    • Champions quality improvement efforts to align with enterprise quality standards

    Ongoing Management of Biomedical Program

    • Develops and manages policies and procedures to run the operations of the business effectively
    • Executes daily service calls and work order management systems and measures effectiveness
    • Develops consistency to asset management program in conjunction with Supply Chain
    • Implements Life Cycle Management program and leads asset replacement and disposition
    • Coordinates with internal departments at City of Hope including IT, Safety, Facilities Management, Compliance, Legal, Contracts, Purchasing, etc.
    • Sits on committees including capital, equipment, regulatory, etc. to ensure program is positioned correctly and all the right questions are asked
    • Develops regulatory compliance programs and manages to survey readiness at all times and implements tools to measure effectiveness
    • Manages the Preventative Maintenance program to best in class levels.
    • Recommends best practices and implements/manages large equipment service contracts as part of the evolution of the program
    • Responds to emergencies to ensure business continuity and patient safety
    • Sets training and educational opportunities to ensure department operates safely and effectively
    • Ensures equipment is compliant as needed for with USP 800 Pharmacies, the FDA, The Joint Commission, etc
    • Develops, implements and maintains a Safety Management program

    Supports the Organizational Growth

    • Supports the strategic organizational growth through acquisition, expansion or new development.
    • Sets standards and specifications for all non-fixed equipment purchases and integration
    • Coordinates with design and construction teams to ensure planning is executed in an organized, standardized and efficient manner
    • Facilitates activation and turnover of expansion and new assets for a smooth integration

    Financial Management

    • Responsible for development, management and execution of all RFPs, purchase orders, contracts, service contracts, etc.
    • Responsible to recommend contract consolidation or elimination in the best interest of the finance and operations of the business
    • Responsible to develop operating and capital budgets and forecast future growth
    • Manages operating budgets monthly and ensures costs are allocated effectively
    • Assists in the development of business cases for capital expenditures or other initiatives

    Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering or related analytical field or 10 years of leadership in Biomedical Engineering
    • 5 years comparable experience and formal biomedical engineering training. Previous experience in a healthcare operations environment.

    Required Certification/Licensure:

    • Valid California Driver’s License

    Preferred education experience and skills:

    • Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering or comparable field.
