Biomedical Engineering Technician delivers biomedical equipment services that provide safety testing, repair, maintenance, and user support of biomedical clinical and research equipment. Assembles, installs, repairs, and maintains a variety of medical equipment. Being a Biomedical Engineering Technician tests the functionality of equipment and takes accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity measurements to calibrate devices. Coordinates with medical staff and vendors to troubleshoot problems, resolve equipment malfunctions and enable new devices. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering Technician supports medical staff with equipment operations training. Typically requires an associate degree. Typically requires Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Biomedical Engineering Technician works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job.     Position Summary:
    As an Outside Machinist, you will provide maintenance, repair and technical support to the customer and provide technical support on shipboard machinery systems as a subject matter expert at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC).


    Contract Specifications:
    • Must be able to obtain/maintain a DBIDS badge and maintain base access.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Accomplish mechanical repairs and testing onboard ships and in the shop.
    • Work includes, but is not limited to, removal, repairs, overhaul, installation, alignment, troubleshooting, modifying, and testing on ship's mechanical systems and components including:
      • Antenna tilting groups (ATGs), twin and single boom
      • Boat davit equipment, including nitrogen accumulators. System nitrogen charging, hydro testing, and functional/operational testing of related systems
      • Torpedo strike down equipment, including lift and dogging hatch actuator cylinders
      • Various types and sizes of hydraulic and pneumatic pumps, including centrifugal pumps, vane pumps, sliding shoe pumps, piston pumps, and closed and open-ended pumps. Additionally, related couplings, mechanical seals, and other pump-related components.
      • Capstans, winches, anchor windlasses, steering pumps, sliding pad eyes, and towed array mechanical equipment. Includes equipment brakes and slew motor gear assemblies.
      • Mag cable reel brake systems
      • Slew motors, luff cylinders, and hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders and related components
      • Retractable bitts and roller chocks, Baxter bolts, and deck drains
      • Morpack and Limitorque motor operated valve (MOV) mechanical gear assemblies and hydraulic control motors
      • Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) and JP-5 hose reels

    Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • Minimum 4 years work experience on Navy ships
    • Ability to utilize standard mechanic's tools, torque wrenches, micrometers, dial indicators and other precision measuring instruments, fixtures, portable machine tools, and various gauges in the removal, repair, overhaul, assembly, installation and testing of equipment, subassemblies, and components.
    • Ability to disassemble, clean, inspect, and assess equipment parts and components to determine the extent of wear and damage in justification of recommendations for reuse or disposal of assemblies and components.
    • Ability to identify materials and parts requiring replacement on equipment, components and subassemblies being worked on. Provide materials and parts replacement recommendations to the Government.

    Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience:
    • Ability to protect machined and critical surfaces during removal. Install foreign material exclusion (FME) coverings on all openings. Identify, tag, and inspect system, equipment and piping components, connections, fasteners and parts for reinstallation or replacement.
    • Skills to perform pump and motor alignments using Rotoalign laser alignment optics and reverse indicator methods.
    • Capable of ensuring all removed interferences are correctly reinstalled as part of completion for all shipboard work.
    • Experience with drilling, tapping, threading, and cleaning various deck and equipment fastener/fastener hole threads, including deck drains and Baxter bolts.

    Physical Demands and Expectations:
    • Frequent standing, sitting, crawling, kneeling, stooping, crouching, walking, climbing stairs, handling, feeling with hands, reaching with arms, work on scaffolding, work in inclement weather
    • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
    • Noise conditions range from very quiet to very noisy
    • Able to work onboard navy ships
    • Ability to communicate effectively both speaking, hearing and electronically (email/text)
    • Manual and finger dexterity; able to grasp, manipulate, assemble small objects
    • Ability to wear a mask for prolonged periods of time
