Bookstore Director - Higher Ed. directs and oversees all activities related to the operation of a university/college bookstore. Purchases new books, coordinates the sale of used books, orders new inventory as needed. Being a Bookstore Director - Higher Ed. ensures that the textbook inventory is aligned with the needs and class schedule of the students. Hires, trains, and supervises employees. Additionally, Bookstore Director - Higher Ed. prepares and manages the staff work schedule so that the store is adequately staffed. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a senior institutional officer. The Bookstore Director - Higher Ed. manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be a Bookstore Director - Higher Ed. typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Overview

     

    POSITION SUMMARY: Assists the management team in the daily operations of the store and in meeting sales and production goals. Daily duties will include some management functions, opening/closing store, ensuring themselves/staff follows all policies and procedures. This position encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities related to book selling, including knowledge of books.

     

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions Statements:

  • Assists management in ensuring that revenue and production goals are achieved. Provides input/suggestions for improving product flow, inventory control, and operational efficiency.
  • Opens and closes the store, fills out the necessary reports for the day. Provides guidance and direction to staff and ensures that all staff are assigned to the correct work area for proper coverage as well as assign break periods and lunch. 
  • Provides customer service covering all aspects of the business including the process of handling and receiving donations, dealing with book inquiries, identifying customer needs and offering dvice or referring them to management when appropriate.
  • Prices books and other merchandise. Shelves books accurately and performs section pulls in a timely manner, meeting required store production/shelving goals, and keeping the store  well-stocked with fresh merchandise.
  • Creates window and in-store displays that are visually appealing. Maintain the store in an orderly fashion and merchandise appropriately displayed.
  • Provides feedback for Performance Reviews and Progressive Discipline.
  • Documents and reports any concerns or issues in a prompt and timely manner to management.
  • Assists in training all non-management staff.
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Provides coverage at other locations when necessary.
  • Asist with other duties as assigned.
  • Utilizes 4DX methodology for achieving organizational goals.
  • Qualifications

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.

     

    Experience: One year related experience.

     

    Computer Skills: Basic computer skills, Email, Internet use, Microsoft Word and Excel.

     

    Certificates & Licenses: It is preferred that candidates have a CA Driver’s License and driving record acceptable to Goodwill’s insurance company requirements.

     

    Other Requirements: Ability to operate POS. Must be able to understand the basic principles of running a retail store: Stocking, merchandise flow, quotas, cash handling, bank deposit procedures and sales reports. Ability to work with simple arithmetic (addition, subtraction, fractions, percentages, etc.). Ability to calculate figures and amounts related to cash handling (for example, change discounts, etc.). Ability to read and understand sales reports.
