DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute involves approximately 90 personnel, participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts and foundations; in addition the GI provides funding support for approximately 50 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.
The Pathogen Genomics team at the GI uses the latest sequence analysis and visualization technologies to facilitate outbreak investigation and research for public health responses. JOB DUTIES
55% - Data Import and Analysis
- Utilize software tools to examine moderately complex genomic data, apply knowledge of basic biology to interpret genetic variants, check for consistency, and assist in analysis and interpretation. Document processes used and decisions reached.
- Develop scripts that help analyze metadata to ensure its consistency and accuracy.
25% - Data Display
- Create and maintain web pages associated with data sets. Accurately capture and document experimental results and methods at an appropriate technical level. Read relevant scientific papers, and incorporate information into data descriptions and data verification.
20% - External Lab Communication and Relationship Management
- Apply knowledge of basic biology to interpret genetic variants, and analyze data files from next generation sequencing pipelines.
- Serve as UCSC contact for one or more external biomedical labs. Establish data agreements and data delivery schedules, educate labs on metadata standards, and assist labs in data and metadata submission. In one-on-one and in small groups, demonstrates bioinformatics tools developed at the Genomics Institute.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.
- Intermediate knowledge of rules and regulations related to sensitive data.
- Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds.

- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
