Budget Director jobs in San Francisco, CA

The ideal candidate for this full-time regular position will have strong financial management, project coordination, communication, and organizational skills.  Under the direction of the AVP of Financial Planning & Analysis, you will be responsible for coordinating the development of the University’s base operating budget. This position will also be responsible for projecting net tuition revenue, identifying Key Budget Performance Indicators and teaming with the FP&A team and constituents to build reliable forecasting and analytical models.

The Budget Development & Financial Planning Director, along with the Budget Team, will work with all Center Managers and Directors of Operations in developing, implementing, updating, and reviewing annual and multi-year budgets. You will assist in the development and maintenance of budget reports through the University’s various reporting mechanisms. You will also take ownership of our budgeting tool (Prophix).

Responsibilities

• Takes a key role in developing the annual and multi-year University Operating Budget, working closely with the Budget Team, Center Managers, and Directors of Operations.
• Supports the development and maintenance of the Annual Budget Development Project Plan to ensure all deadlines are met, and transparent communication channels are established.
• Teams with FP&A to ensure timely and accurate reporting for use by the Budget Team, University Leadership, the Budget & Priorities Committee, and the Center Managers.
• Develops a rolling three-to-five-year University Forecast for operating expenses and revenue to support the strategic directives of the university.
• Works with IT and the Data & Analytics Manager to maintain the Budgeting System of Record (Prophix). Strong focus on data integrity
• Develop and review financial models and templates with appropriate university constituents; collaborates with constituents to understand and meet information needs.
• Coordinates the effort to revise the Budget each fall, as necessary, based on enrollment figures and other updated projections.
• Supports capital budget development process
• Coordinates with Human Resources, Center Managers, and Directors of Operations to ensure that accurate personnel budgets are maintained, and personnel expenses are accurately projected.
•  Establish controls and develop procedures to maintain and improve existing budget development systems and tools. Manage and coordinate all budget reporting requirements and support technology enhancements. 
• Collaborate with Institutional Research & Business Office to ensure accurate source data is used in FP&A models.
• Prepare and maintain documentation of budget development and reporting procedures and identify areas of improvement. Actively seek and implement ways to improve, streamline and automate processes.
• Provide excellent customer service to all stakeholders throughout the budget development and planning process, as well as the rest of the year.
• Assist the AVP for FP&A in all areas of the Planning and Budgeting function, including special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in economics, finance, or related field
• Minimum seven years of experience in financial planning and analysis or comparable experience, preferably, but not necessarily at a higher education institution
• Advanced excel skills, including financial modeling.
• Strong project coordination skills, strong analytical skills, adept at variance analysis, forecasting revenue and expenses, tracking and trending of key performance indicators.
• Adept at visual display of quantitative information
• Knowledge of budgeting and other financial systems, we currently use the Prophix Budget Module and Colleague ERP
• Results oriented with strong attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to prioritize and effectively communicate interdependencies and project status.
• Works and collaborates well within a team environment.
• Provide a service-oriented approach to constituents.
• Focus on successfully meeting deadlines with accurate, efficiently designed work products.
