ENGINEERING/PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs plan review and inspection of residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and related ordinances. Reports to Superintendent of Building Standards.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs on site building inspections for compliance with submitted documents and adopted codes.
Reviews building plans, documents, and calculations for code compliance.
Interacts professionally with coworkers, supervisor, contractors and the general public.
Maintains certifications and knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions by obtaining Continuing in Education Units either in house or at other approved locations.
Refers to adopted building codes, calculations, technical manuals, permit records and daily inspection logs.
Answers questions and interacts with contractors, design professionals, and the public through phone, email and in person.
Enters records, reports and notes from previous inspections and reviews.
Ensures that work in the community has permits and licensed contractors.
Operates a variety of machinery and equipment such as a department vehicle.
Utilizes a variety of tools to include electrical test instruments, measuring devices, basic hand tools, ladders and writing devices.
Utilizes a variety of computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, email, permitting & inspection, etc.
Receives and/or reviews information such as adopted building codes, building plans, required calculations, technical publications and instructions, and permits.
Prepares and/or generates documents to include blueprint and submitted document reviews, notices of correction, daily inspection record, mathematical calculations and emails.
Relays results of inspections and daily activities to supervisor.
Coordinates daily activities with necessary coworkers to accomplish stated duties.
Contacts contractors, design professionals, and the public with reports of previous inspections and reviews of submitted documents.
Researches and reviews adopted codes for use in determining code compliance of documents submitted for review.
Schedules daily inspections and meetings as requested or required
Operates and maintains assigned vehicle.
Performs other department related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a Technical College diploma in a job related field, supplemented by five years of experience in field inspection and plan review, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Must be certified as a Commercial Building, Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector by International Code Council.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a computer, telephone, drafting equipment, etc. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
