Building Inspector

  • Under general supervision the Building Inspector position inspects and implements codes and ordinances adopted by the city including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, structural, energy, irrigational and pool projects.

    Posted pay range is the starting salary.  Pay rate offered is based on experience.

    • Performs residential inspections by educating builders and contractors about inspection processes; handles stressful situations in a professional manner; ensures integrity of products to the end user; adjusts schedules for home owners and contractors; ensures proper licenses and permits of contractors; provides mandatory inspection on replacements.
    • Performs residential and commercial irrigation inspection by meeting contractors on site; plans reviews and educates constructors on inspecting process; answers field calls and questions.
    • Maintains knowledge of current codes and ordinances by communicating with other inspectors regarding applications and enforcement of requirements in the field; provides an open atmosphere to contractors and the public; meets with suppliers & vendors regarding new products.
    • Carries out CDBG-Housing repairs/rehabilitation programs by engaging in an initial walk through with owner and director; engages in a contractor walk through, writes up and answers questions; answers field calls from director and contractors; goes over bid evaluations; makes sure to change orders; inspects to make sure all items on write ups are done.
    • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
    • Minimum one (1) year experience in the building industry working in the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, concrete, framing, or energy fields is required.
    • Valid Class C Driver’s License. 
    • Must be able to obtain a combination inspector and state plumber inspector license within 2 years.
