Building and Grounds Supervisor supervises and trains building and grounds maintenance staff. Oversees landscaping activities, the maintenance of sidewalks and parking areas, and the removal of trash and snow. Being a Building and Grounds Supervisor maintains and monitors the operation of all utility systems such as heating, ventilating and air conditioning. May be responsible for the housekeeping staff. Additionally, Building and Grounds Supervisor, a level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. Has no authority for staff actions. Generally has a minimum of 2 years experience as an individual contributor. Grounds Worker
Eastern Illinois University is seeking candidates for a full-time Civil Service position of Grounds Worker in the Department of Facilities Planning, and Management/Grounds. This position will perform tasks related to grounds maintenance and grounds construction. Duties for this position may include:
- Application and knowledge of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and fertilizers.
- Aeration of athletic fields.
- Maintenance and maintaining sprinkler systems.
- Preparation of playing field surfaces.
- Preparation of intramural and sports related fields: softball, baseball, tennis, soccer and track & field.
- Maintaining a timeline for practices and game events
- Planting, fertilizing, mowing, watering, removing plant materials from grounds, and composting.
- Pick up litter and empty trash.
- Removal of ice and snow from streets, parking lots, sidewalks, steps, and ramps.
- Set up and take down for special events.
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Assist Grounds Gardeners in planting flower beds.
- Assist in the installation of underground drainage, irrigation, and utility lines.
Requirements for this position are:
- High School graduation or equivalent
- Any one or combination totaling six (6) months in the categories listed below:
- Coursework or vocational training in horticulture, landscaping or a closely related field where twelve (15) semester hours = six (6) months.
- Work experience in grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, agriculture work, grounds construction and/or tending to lawns, turfs, trees, flowers, bushes or other shrubbery, ornamental plants, and other grounds-related work.
- Work experience in one of the following: landscape, nursery, agriculture, or grounds related work.
- Valid/current driver’s license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
The Civil Service Examination for this classification is a credentials assessment. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from qualified applicants.
