The Facilities Department provides the physical environment, utilities, and facilities support services necessary to promote the educational and research activities of the university. Accountabilities:
The
Landscape/Grounds is responsible for performing the work of a general groundskeeper, with a focus on landscaping:
- Maintaining manicured campus landscape aesthetic
- Monitoring and maintaining plant health
- Identify and troubleshoot problematic landscape areas
- Provide input on capital projects & collaborate with Facilities team on new landscape initiatives
- Perform lawn maintenance including grass cutting, trimming, seeding, fertilization, litter and leaf removal, hedge trimming, brush cutting, limited tree trimming and felling, planting, weed control and general beautification of University property
- Maintain athletic fields for intramural and intercollegiate events, care of hockey rink including ice making and Zamboni operation, pest control and pesticide application, minor maintenance and lubrication of mechanical equipment, operation of garbage and recycling trucks, and other similar kinds of work as required
- Removing weeds, leaves, and litter from garden and landscape beds on a regular basis
- Edging and mulching tree rings, gardens, and landscape plant beds
- Planting annuals, bulbs, perennials, and shrubs for small scale landscape improvement projects
- Selecting, ordering, and/or delivering plant material to incorporate into campus landscape beds
- Trimming small trees, hedges, and shrubs as needed
- Watering trees, landscape beds, and lawn areas as needed, particularly during initial establishment
- Responsible for deliveries of large items, stage/chair set ups and other related duties for campus events, furniture moves, assisting tradespersons as general laborers, traffic sign maintenance, garage and fleet vehicle cleaning, snow and ice removal (mechanically and manually), and all general tasks related to campus work requests as assigned. Must be willing to accept assignments at any work location, as workload requires
Professional Experience/Qualifications
- Working knowledge of plant material, ability to discern weeds and invasive
- Physically able to perform typical landscape maintenance tasks
- Operate maintenance equipment, i.e. truck, gator, string trimmer, edger, shovels, etc.
- Attention to detail and eye for design/aesthetic
- Self-starter who takes ownership of garden and landscape beds
- Experience interacting with team members and other campus constituents with a positive attitude
- Must have basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Gmail, FAMIS and the ability to use computer programs to complete work order entries, material procurement, estimating, and other shop related activity
- Must be able to work evenings, nights, and weekend hours as required
- Requires strong customer service and problem solving skills
- Must be capable of working in a setting with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and visitors on a daily basis
- Adaptability and flexibility to assist with other grounds-related tasks
- Good communication & collaboration skills
- Winter time maintenance activities include snow removal such as; salting, shoveling, plowing and other manual labor activities as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in operation of motorized farm-type equipment and some background knowledge of general grounds work and equipment maintenance preferred
- New York State DEC Pesticide Applicator license highly desirable
- Horticultural/nursery background
- Landscape contractor
- Arborist
Education
- A minimum of a High school degree/GED, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are attained
- A minimum of a two year degree in horticulture or landscape management or similar degree or the equivalent of educational course work and experience from which similar skills can be attained is preferred
