    GENERAL SUMMARY
    Under general supervision operates a school bus or activity bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations to transport students to and from school(s) faculties' or school sponsored activities. Responsible for maintaining discipline of students while operating a school bus. Reports to the Transportation supervisor within their assigned area.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Operates a bus over route that has been designated and approved by the Transportation Supervisor and the State Department of Education
    • Operates equipment in accordance with all state laws and regulations. Performs all required pre-trip and post-trip inspections
    • Maintains discipline of students being transported. Notifies parents/guardian as necessary and reports misconduct to the Transportation Supervisor for appropriate disciplinary action using incident report provided
    • Maintains a clean appearance of equipment. Reports any vandalism or equipment failures to immediate supervisor
    • Provides written reports of road hazard on assigned routes
    • Maintains an up-to-date status of school bus registration forms and other student data within the transportation office
    • Attends safety meetings and other meetings as required
    • Maintains an up-to-date daily records on mileage, load counts, student's data, maintenance reports, timesheets, and student assigned seating
    • Exhibits acceptable conducts as a Lexington School District Two employees as prescribed by School Board policies and procedures
    • Operates a two-way radio to maintain communication with schools and main office. Operates a calculator in completing required forms
    • Utilizes various supplies such as cleaning agents, office supplies, etc. to maintain a clean school bus interior and exterior
    • Maintains current required commercial driver's license and other operation's certification and medical certification
    • Administer general first aid when needed
    • Performs other related duties as required

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience
    High school diploma or GED required. Must be at least 18 years of age with an excellent motor vehicle driving record. Must possess an up-to-date commercial driver's license. Prefer a minimum of 2 years driving experience. Must meet state and federal requirements for required licenses, medical and school bus operator certification.

    Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the operation of a school bus. Knowledge of certification and license required for bus operation. Understands the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment. Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining the appearance of equipment. Knowledge of the proper forms and procedures to be completed for reporting student misbehavior, equipment failure, daily activity, mileage and time records. Knows the proper procedures for emergency situations. Knowledge of daily bus route and the location of schools and other landmarks.

    Skills/Efforts: Is able to operate a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations. Has the ability to carry out duties in extreme conditions of weather and noise. Is able to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Is capable of applying common sense, understanding and independent judgment in the performance of prescribed duties and tasks. Has the ability to communicate effectively with students, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public. Is able to maintain the required State Department of Education school bus operator's certification, physical performance and commercial driver's license. Is able to handle emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner.

    Working Conditions: Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to drive in varying weather conditions which means exposure to conditions such as heat, cold, rain, humidity. Drive even when road conditions are poor.

    Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and awareness. Physical demands are related to the operation of a school bus wherein one is required to drive, operate handbrake and other controls.

    Maintains cleanliness of equipment and assigned vehicle. Must be able to move 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds in the event of a bus emergency

    Responsibility: Supervises bus riders.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    Physical Requirements: Requires sedentary work that involves walking, driving, or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 125 pounds of force on a recurring basis. Must be able to complete the Physical Performance Test (PPT) in accordance with state requirements.

    Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

    Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to subordinates and co-workers. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.
    Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of administrative and statistical documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare various types of reports and documents with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Has the ability to speak before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

    Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply influence systems in managing a staff; to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques. To make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

    Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees and students. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages including personnel, transportation management, student supervision, etc.

    Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, using mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
    Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

    Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment; to operate passenger / motor vehicles.
    Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

    Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

    Interpersonal temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. The worker may be subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job.

    PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
    Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the state and federal laws relating to the safe operation of a school bus as well as School District policies and Transportation procedures as they pertain to the performance of daily duties. Has thorough knowledge of the organization of the District. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Is able to make sound, educated decisions. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has knowledge of operation and maintenance of school buses and other vehicles used for student transportation. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required? Is able to monitor student / employee behavior and to take action as needed to correct behavior problems. Is able to develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, and subordinates in situations involving bus safety and security. Has knowledge of the layout of local roads and of the locations and characteristics of the various neighborhoods. Is able to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Is able to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear and effective manner. Has knowledge of terminology and various professional languages within the department. Has knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, punctuation and spelling; has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Has knowledge of and is able to use modern office practices and equipment, including computers and related software. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
