Position Description

Our Capital Projects and Construction Division is looking for a strong candidate to fill a pipe drafting need. We are open to this person working out of the Sumter Fabrication Shop, North Charleston office, or Greenville office. This candidate will need to be knowledgeable about all aspects of pipe drafting in both CAD and by hand. In addition, be knowledgeable about potential costs of materials. The role of a pipe drafter is critical to the project success at Thompson.

Job Responsibilities

• Using CAD software, create isometric piping drawings and spool sheets using CAD software based on a variety of client-provided information, including specifications, 3D models, P&ID s, orthographic drawings, line lists, etc.
• Create hand-drawn isometrics if needed.
• If client provides isometrics, mark up isometrics to identify spool splits and shop vs. field welds, or create spool sheets using CAD software.
• Review project parameters and specifications related to piping requirements.
• Create Bills of Materials.
• Generate and submit RFI s to client to resolve issues or questions related to the piping scope.
• Work with team members to gain understanding of project priorities and sequence of work and execute pipe design work accordingly. Feed drawings to the fabrication team in a timely manner to support the project schedule.
• Participate in document control process and ensure work is being performed based on the latest drawing revisions
• Support the purchasing process for piping materials as requested by management
• Support the change management process as requested by management. Generate drawing revisions and assist in quantifying additional work to support change order pricing.
• Conduct necessary field work inclusive of walk downs of current systems, location of tie-ins and measuring.

Job Qualifications

• Experience designing process and utility piping for industrial projects.
• Must be proficient in CAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to hand draw piping isometrics and sketches.
• Must have good communication skills, verbal and written, with all levels from client, management to workers and subs.
• Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly with supervisor/co-workers/clients/vendors and take direction from site manager.
• Must be able to utilize math at the college level and read/operate precision measuring equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, shop drawings, procedure manuals and safety rules.
• Candidate may be required to pass a drug test and criminal background check based on job location/requirements.
