About This Position

The Cafeteria Assistant performs a variety of manual tasks in the preparation and serving of food; cleans kitchen equipment and areas;and completes related tasks as required by supervisor or designee.

Essential Functions

Employee may be required to do any or all of the following, as directed by supervisor:

• Assist in preparing with heating foods.
• Stock snack bars or salad bars, transport food from one location to another,
  arrange food and trays for serving and serve food in snack bars or serving lines.
• Assist, when needed, with collecting money and making change, and operation
  of food service computer.
• Operate commercial kitchen equipment and appliances, including dishwasher, in
  a safe manner.
• Participate in maintenance of proper sanitary conditions, including cleaning
  utensils, dishes, equipment and facilities, and proper storage of food. Maintain
  kitchen and serving area in clean, orderly fashion.
• Assist student workers on serving line.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions from supervisor(s).
• In the absence of the satellite kitchen cook, may assume responsibilities of that
  position.
• Perform other related duties and assume other responsibilities as needed and
  designated by supervisor (s). 

Knowledge and Abilities

• Demonstrated dependability and reliabilitt
• Ability to skillfully assist in food preparation, work rapidly and with frequent
  interruptions; count, add, subtract, and tally series of numbers; make change
  quickly and accurately
• Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions and to
  maintain and establish effective and collaborative relationships with
  supervisors, other staff, students, families, and general public
• Ability to operate according to district policies and procedures
• Mental and physical skills necessary to perform essential functions with a
  minimum of supervision

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Food Handler’s Card

Preferred Qualifications

• Paid or volunteer experience in serving and preparation of large quantities of food
• Bilingual in Spanish

Compensation

• The Cafeteria Assistant position is at Level D of the classified salary schedule and is based on a 178 or 179-day/9-month work year
• The estimated beginning salary for this position is $14.09-$14.95 per hour; however, highly experienced candidates may be placed higher on the salary schedule at hiring
• Applicants who hold a Bachelor's degree will automatically be placed at Step 3
• Where will I be placed on the salary schedule?
• In addition to this salary, the Canby School District will pay the employee’s 6 percent PERS contribution
