DEPARTMENT: PRODUCTION / LAYER HOUSES

Position: Hen Caretaker / General Labor

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Hen Caretaker / General Labor person’s primary duties are to care for cage free flocks. This position is a support role for several aspects within the layer houses while providing care for the hens, and other related duties as assigned by management. Hens require care 7 days a week care, thus scheduled work on weekends and holidays are required. In regards to bio-security, employees place of residence may not own or house any pet birds, chickens, and or any type of poultry livestock at their place of residence (this does not include wild birds).

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Providing care for the hens while ensuring proper water and feed levels at all times while attending to water leaks.

· Ensure proper ventilation and temperatures, taking appropriate action and or reporting when needed.

· Perform duties such as walking, gathering, manual lifting, sorting, reaching, lifting, etc. providing extreme care while carrying out duties

· Report defective equipment, questionable conditions, egg quality issues and bird health to the department supervisor

· Maintain the work area and structures in a clean and orderly condition

· Perform related duties as required by supervisory staff

· Perform tasks while adhering to local, state, federal and company safety policies and protocols

· Safely operate authorized equipment and tasks*

· Participate in general maintenance*of equipment

· Perform vaccinations*

*Minors are exempt from this and any other duty considered to be hazardous in regards to age specific employment of minors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· May be required to stand for long periods of time

· May involve some repetitive motions

· Must be able to frequently lift 25 lbs. and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.

· May also engage in frequent walking, standing bending, stooping, squatting, pushing and pulling throughout the work shift.

· Due to the open agricultural type environment of the layer houses, must be able to work in various weather and temperature conditions to include extreme heat, humidity and cold*

REQUIREMENTS:

· Understand and follow basic verbal and written instructions

· Effectively communicate information and respond to questions from various levels within the organization

· Perform basic visual quality inspections on products

· Must be able to comply with all local, state, federal, and company policies.

· Ability to comply with the strictest of food safety standards and must report any concerns

· Ability to comply with the strictest standards for animal welfare and to report incidents of abuse, neglect, and or breach of bio-security in order to preserve the health and welfare of our birds.

FOOD SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY:

· Must follow all standards of personal hygiene practices.

· Responsible for reporting foodborne illness symptoms and diagnoses to the Site Manager, Manager, QA Supervisor or Shift Supervisor. Employees are responsible for following all food safety practices, reporting and setting an example to others.

o Reportable Symptoms:

o Vomiting, Diarrhea, Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes), Sore throat with fever

o Infected cuts and burns with pus on hands and wrists
