    Overview

    An Electrical Technician 3 – Calibration, under general supervision safely performs a variety of calibration functions. These functions include calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing Measurement & Test Equipment (M&TE). An Electrical Technician 3 - Calibration is a journeyman-level position that understands the basic theory behind the measurement methods used in M&TE. This individual must be able to produce lab reports and communications in support of the calibration scope of services and other job-related functions.

    Responsibilities

    The Electrical Technician 3 - Calibration work may also include the following:

    • Use Piping/Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and Instrument Indices to locate and service M&TE.
    • Calibrate M&TE used to measure pressure, temperature, vibration, speed, voltage, current, frequency, and flow.
    • Use ProCal software to create an instrument record, develop a test case, and record DUT measurements.
    • Prove flowmeters in-situ using the MolBox system and sonic flow nozzles.
    • Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution of routine nature.
    • Assist with developing calibration procedures for new or unique instruments.
    • Use Lock-out Tag-out (LOTO) plans to ensure instruments can be removed and calibrated safely.
    • Use Hart communicators, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, digital multi-meters, and logic analyzers to troubleshoot complex measurement problems.
    • Perform calculations relating to signal measurement and measurement uncertainty.
    • Use a variety of hand tools and testing instruments; and work safely with systems operating at levels up to 480 volts.

     

    Electrical Technician 3 - Calibration under general supervision, may perform minor tasks as needed, including, but not limited to:

    • Maintaining facilities in clean, safe, and orderly condition.
    • Organizing the interior and exterior of the work area and other maintenance facilities.
    • Other duties as assigned to ensure timely project execution.

Technician on-the-job training and expectation of proficiency will vary with their assigned duties.

    Qualifications

    • A High School diploma or GED and specific training in instrumentation, controls, and electrical installation are required.
    • At least three years of experience with process M&TE calibration.
    • Ability to analyze and interpret data to identify errors or trends in calibration data.
    • Electrician Journeyman's license.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
    • Experienced using ProCal or similar calibration management software.
    • Basic understanding of measurement processes utilized in M&TE, measurement uncertainty, error, resolution, Test Accuracy Ratio (TAR) and Test Uncertainty Ratio (TUR).
    • Basic understanding of electronics, electrical circuitry, and signal processing.
    • Basic knowledge of computer systems and software programs for direct work activities such as Excel and administrative duties such as Email is required.

     

    Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements:

    • High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET with at least ten (10) years of job-related experience or bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least eight (8) years of job-related experience.
    • Calibration or Controls Technician Certification.
    • Ability to read control system programming such as ladder logic, function block, structured text, sequential function block, and instruction list.
    • Specific training and thorough knowledge in a specific area of measurement, instrumentation, or controls.
    • Broad knowledge of other disciplines such as general math, geometry, electronics, etc.
    • Working knowledge of diagnostic equipment and associated computer software.
    • For instruments that cannot be calibrated at NETL, identify a third-party entity, obtain a quotation, and arrange shipment.

    Work Environment/Physical Demands

    Principle Area of Assignment:

    • Morgantown Calibration Shop in support of R&D projects.

     

    Conditions of Employment:

    • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the UMWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

     

    Physical and Mental Demands:

    • Entry into confined spaces is required.
    • Lifting of up to 50 pounds.
    • Kneeling, standing, and walking, and use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness, and must be able to work according to schedule.

    Work Environment:

    • The majority of the workday is in various environments, including outdoor areas, lab/research areas, and inside administrative areas. Assists in performing maintenance, housekeeping, or administrative duties in a typical shop environment where certain hazards exist.

     

    Integrated Safety Management:

    • Know and follow environment, safety, and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that apply to their job assignments.
    • Become knowledgeable of and maintain awareness of the ES&H hazards associated with their work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
    • Report all unsafe operations and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in cases of imminent danger.
    • Work only on those tasks in which they have the required competence, training, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to oneself, employees, the public, or the environment.
    • Maintain active involvement in introducing, revising, and/or promoting ES&H/ISM program activities.

     

    Hours of Work:

     

    This is typically an 8-hour-per-day daylight schedule.  Response to urgent callouts at night and on weekends is required, as well as scheduled weekend/holiday electrical outages to perform preventive and corrective maintenance. However, these instances are very limited.
