    Job Summary

    Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant or Police Lieutenant, a UCSF Police Officer protects life and property and enforces local, state and federal laws. Officers perform regular law enforcement duties including: providing community policing, foot and vehicle patrol of University of California and surrounding properties, investigating and preparing preliminary investigation reports, issuing citations, making arrests, assisting in the prosecution of violators of law, providing crime prevention information, and serving as a proactive resource to a uniquely diverse community. Officers may also work as part of a security detail with civilian and other law enforcement agencies at University events, and perform other duties as assigned. Certified and conforms to the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).

    This is a trainee level position. Non-sworn incumbents perform the entry level functions of the position under direct supervision of a police officer of higher rank except those duties requiring Peace Officer status or requiring the use of firearms. Successful candidates are required to be enrolled in an accredited police academy offering POST course requirements at the basic level. Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve routine police issues. Works on problems of limited scope. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

    Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

    Department Description

    The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre- and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children's Hospital; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. UCSF is considered one of the nation's premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. Additionally, the department has expanded police and security services to the Mission Bay Campus and Benioff Oakland Children's Hospital.

    The department has achieved accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).     Required Qualifications

    For Both Positions:

    • US citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
    • At least 21 years old at time of hire.
    • Possess a valid California Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record.
    • Basic knowledge in the following areas: First Aid / CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, use of firearms. New recruits - within 1 year of appointment
    • Observes situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely. New recruits - within 1 year of appointment
    • Demonstrated verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
    • Able to pass medical and psychological examinations, and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards. No Felony convictions.
    • Able to work rotating shifts in all inclement and diverse weather conditions. Daily function may require wearing a uniform.
    • Skill in speaking and writing English clearly using appropriate vocabulary to provide information, and prepare written reports.

    In addition to the above,
    For Police Trainee Position:
    1. Graduation from high school
    2. Upon hire, a Police Trainee must successfully complete a POST Regular Basic Academy
    3. SB2 and or SB960 as noted with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Gov. Code 1029/1031 compliant
    For Police Officer Position:
    1. Graduation from high school
    2. Hold a current California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic certificate or completed the California POST Regular Basic Course (RBC).
    3. Obtain Proof of Eligibility from POST prior to full employment
    4. SB2 and or SB960 as noted with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Gov. Code 1029/1031 compliant
    5. Maintain POST Firearms and PC 832 Arrest qualifications.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree
    • Knowledge of local, State, Federal, and University of CA laws, rules, and regulations as applicable to the police function, and basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.

    License/Certification

    • Must complete a basic law enforcement training program and obtain certification.
    • Hold a current California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
    • Basic certificate or completed the California POST Regular Basic Course (RBC)
    • Proof of Eligibility from POST prior to full employment
    • SB2 and or SB960 as noted with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Gov. Code 1029/1031 compliant
