    SUMMARY

    The Recreation Director is primarily focused on managing the daily operations of the Recreation Department, focusing on the provision of excellent recreation facilities and programs that meet the diverse needs of Bethel Park residents. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Municipal Manager.  Supervision is exercised over Community Center and Recreation Department personnel.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Supervises recreation daily operations, development, and implementation of new programs
    • Evaluation and improvement of existing programs, supervision and evaluation of all program supervisors and activity instructors
    • Develop and review budgets for all current and active department programs and project revenues including registration and sponsor fees, activity expenditures for payroll, contract costs and materials and supplies
    • Confers at frequent intervals with Public Works department, recommends arrangement of recreation areas and facilities to carry out programs
    • Communicates with School District Central Administration, school principals and Athletic Office for availability of facilities and confirms approval of use for department activities
    • Communicates with class supervisors and instructors to confirm all class dates, times, locations, and participant registration
    • Assigns supervisors and instructors to appropriate activities
    • Communicates with Recreation Board Members, Municipal Council and School Board for Recreation Board monthly meetings
    • Supervises Assistant Recreation Director for Community Center Operations and Special Activities
    • Reviews existing programs regularly to meet the needs of residents
    • Communicates with community sports groups and school district to schedule athletic fields
    • Receives citizen inquiries and takes steps for resolution
    • Represents the department with Municipal Council, Recreation Advisory Board and various community and recreation groups
    • Develops and implements operational procedures
    • Evaluates the performance of employees
    • Quarterly financial evaluation of all individual program budgets and reports
    • Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets for publicity of programs
    • Ensure all employees have state mandated background clearances
    • Assist Bethel Park Recreation Swim Team Parent Association to ensure all volunteers have the proper clearances
    • Performs other assigned tasks as required


    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Thorough knowledge of activities, objectives, and principles of public recreation
    • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and direct the activities of personnel involved in a well-rounded recreation program
    • Creativity in developing affordable programming for all residents
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Municipal officials, employees, social organizations and the general public

     

    DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation administration, sports management, or related field
    • 5-7 years of related experience in lieu of education
    • 3-5 years of management experience in a municipal setting preferred
    • Excellent communication and organizations skills are essential as well as solid financial management skills
    • Capability to attend programs and events scheduled outside of normal working hours

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
