Position: Summer Camp Director
The Town of Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is looking motivated individuals who like working outside as well as in a scenic location with the public.
The position of Summer Camp Director requires applicants to be 18 years and older. The job is fulltime with hours of Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. The season is July 1st- August 23rd with pay rates starting at $17-18.
The Summer Camp Head Counselor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the summer camp program including staff management, participant engagement, program development, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved. This role involves leadership, organization, creativity, and a passion for working with children and young adults. Manages a staff of 12-16 and 75 participants. Assists the program coordinator to provide high quality programming. Season is July 1st through August 23rd with trainings preceding and available hours at the end to help close the program. Typical hours are 7:45AM to 4:15PM, one staff meeting weekly that extends the day until 5:00PM. A high level of autonomy is required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Supervision: Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by maintaining a high level of supervision during operational hours. Manage a staff of 12 each day. Assist with the supervision and instruction of Counselors In Training.
· Conflict resolution: Staff must be able to address and resolve conflicts or issues among participants and staff in a fair and constructive manner.
· Facility Maintenance: Perform cleaning duties after the program, maintain cleanliness, and assist with various tasks as needed.
· Engagement: Staff are expected to engage in activities, such as field games, arts and crafts, board games, or conversation, with participants.
· Documentation: Assists with documenting attendance, daily reports, behavior/accident reports.
· Safety and emergency response: Respond to emergencies and non-emergencies, providing assistance and coordinating with appropriate authorities. Maintain clear communication with other staff, program coordinator, and other emergency personnel.
· Program instruction: If applicable, run specialized programs within your area of interest to enhance the participants' experience. Assist in the operations of the Counselor In Training program, including preparing lessons, leading discussions, and mentoring CITS.
· Notify appropriate departments regarding repairs or issues that require attention.
· Assist in organizing and managing activities and programs.
· Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
· Minimum age of 18 years.
· Possess effective communication skills and self-motivation.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
· Ability to keep accurate program records including reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
· Empathy, patience, and the ability to connect with young people.
· Knowledge of youth development principles and best practices.
· First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
· Ability to pass a national fingerprint background check.
· Experience working with youth preferred.
· Experience managing staff or groups is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is required to use hands to operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and talk to youth, parents, and members of the public. The employee may occasionally lift and or move objects up to thirty (50) pounds. This job is primarily outdoors in various weather conditions. May require work outside of the 7:45AM-4:15PM hours.
