Director of Activities/Therapeutic Recreation

  • Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a unique opportunity for a Director of Activities/Therapeutic Recreation to ensure the coordination, development, implementation and evaluation of quality activity services for all residents in our Long Term Care Facility. This position will work alongside the facility's Assistant Director with oversight and management of the Department.

    The Director will create, plan and implement individual and group programs and leisure engagement which meet physical, cognitive, social, spiritual sensory and affective needs of residents. Recreation Service delivery is in accordance with the residents plan of care. Recreation Leaders are an integral and active member of the interdisciplinary team providing recreation/leisure assessments and care plan.

    Responsibilities:

    Assess each resident for interests, talents, and previous patterns of time use, and develops activity plans of care based on that assessment.

    Plan and coordinate a diverse program of activities for residents based upon their interest, needs and abilities in accordance with the Recreation Service Model.

    Organize and conduct community outings and special events

    Maintain current knowledge of best practices and awareness of medical contraindications to ensure residents safety and well-being.

    Utilize strong leadership and creativity to motivate and empower others to actively engage in leisure and foster choice and independence.

    Establish and maintain necessary records regarding activities attendance and activities care plans. Develop an activity care plan with other functional care plans.

    Identify facility and community resources that can contribute to the activity care plan. Plan and schedule activities and develops a monthly calendar of activities. Secure entertainment, program leaders, volunteers, materials, equipment, and transportation, as necessary well in advance of scheduled dates. Assure all residents are involved in activities; group, individual (bedside) and/or independent on a weekly basis.

    Recruit and train volunteer activities staff and maintain volunteer programs which utilize community involvement. Advise nursing, dietary, maintenance, volunteers, etc., of related responsibilities for an activity in advance as necessary. Evaluate effectiveness of programs in terms of resident outcomes.

    Communicate effectively with Director on areas such as care planning, calendar planning, managing of staff, and facility events.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelors degree preferred in Recreational Therapy or a related field

    Associates degree in Recreation Therapy preferred or related field required.

    Two years of experience preferred in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, one of which was full-time in a health care setting.

    Related experience in long-term healthcare.

    Strong communication and interpersonal skills needed. Strong written and verbal skills required.

    Long-term healthcare experience a requirement.

    Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with clients, participants, residents, and families from diverse backgrounds
