    The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April - October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: 04/07/2024.

    Major Duties:
    1) Performance of sanitation maintenance and custodial services on grounds and in buildings;
    2) Mowing and maintenance of grounds and trails using a variety of equipment.
    3)Applies a general knowledge of basic carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting, and plumbing techniques.
    4) Uses and maintains a variety of tools used for general maintenance.
    5) Performs routine inspections.
    6) Maintenance and repair on all operated equipment and tools.

    Area Information:
    This position is located at Wright Brothers National Memorial (http://www.nps.gov/caha), in the Division of Maintenance, and supports the maintenance of park structures within the maintenance program. The Outer Banks are comprised by several towns and villages including Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Buxton, and Ocracoke. The area is a beach destination and the beaches, and Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, provide exceptional recreational opportunities, such as fishing, surfing, boating, and many other water-based activities. There are several highly rated elementary, middle, and high schools and numerous extracurricular activities available for children. These towns all have homes for sale or rent and are within reasonable driving distance. The Outer Banks has many modern conveniences, such as grocery stores, retail shopping, banks, a hospital, and many restaurants.     Conditions of Employment

    • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

    Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

    If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

    The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

    Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

    Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
