    Job Summary: The role of the Nurse Manager in an operating room provides leadership, guidance, supervision and support to the Surgical Services team; as well as direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles as needed. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of OR nurses and Nurse Manager include (but are not limited to):

    Job Responsibilities:

    1. Displays commitment to the mission of the hospital and its values
    2. Accomplish nurse human resource objectives by selecting, orienting, educating, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining team members; communicating job expectations and adhering to policies and procedures.
    3. Fosters an environment that promotes a spirit of inquiry and continuous quality improvement. Assists in the design and implementation of programs with evaluate the efficacy of treatment.
    4. Monitor and assure the compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies.
    5. Promote, monitor and implement the concepts of quality management and evidence based practice. Monitor service areas, recommend approaches for improvement activities, design new processes, collect and measure data, review and report performance over time, improve and redesign processes based on the evaluation and reassess continuously.
    6. Provide programmatic leadership of the clinical component of assigned areas to ensure quality patient care outcomes.
    7. Develop implement goals, standards, policies, educational programs, procedures and practices of clinical care in alignment with strategic plan.
    8. Manage staffing and scheduling processing including the distribution of present and future FTE's.
    9. Assist in preparation, coordination, and evaluation of annual fiscal operation and capital equipment budgets for assigned areas.
    10. Monitor and respond to situations that affect daily operations.
    11. Assist in the development and implementation of departmental retention strategies, recruitment, selection, and discipline of department personnel. Participate in the development, coaching, motivation, and evaluation of department personnel.
    12. Facilitate employee understanding of job requirements. Assure availability of appropriate education to develop and maintain staff competence.
    13. Role models the philosophy of person-centered care. Establish a compassionate environment. Daily patient/family rounding. Handle patient complaints/other issues as they arise.
    14. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; participating in professional societies.
    15. Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary professional staff.
    16. Flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above.
    17. Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
    18. Assesses patient physical condition. Reviews history & physical, vital signs, diagnostic studies, reports any abnormalities.
    19. Conducts pre- and post-operative education. Assess knowledge level, ability to understand and coping mechanisms of patient and support system and educate as needed.
    20. Identifies, prioritizes and organizes nursing action and activities necessary for the desired outcomes.
    21. Coordinates patient care team, use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care, and controls the environment.
    22. Establishes priorities for nursing actions, assigns activities to personnel based on qualifications, and prepares for potential emergencies. Is aware of complications that may require special equipment.
    23. Coordinates patient care in the Operating Room according to Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and guidelines.
    24. Appropriately utilizes Universal Protocol per Cayuga Medical Center policy.
    25. Anticipates needs and provides equipment and supplies based on patient age, health status and proposed procedure.
    26. Plans and organizes self to meet patient care requirements and unit needs within shift. Stays beyond as necessary.
    27. Demonstrates ability to prioritize needs and care of patient during both scheduled and emergent situations.
    28. Demonstrates ability to stay calm, function with purpose and react appropriately in all situations
    29. Communicates and documents monitoring and physiologic responses to interventions (e.g. Medications, vital signs, LOC, skin color, change in physical status, etc.) to alert surgeon/anesthesiologist of changes that may require medical intervention.
    30. Demonstrates effective delegation skills.
    31. Completes all mandatory educational requirements and seeks out learning experiences.
    32. Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies and correct hand washing/scrubbing technique.
    33. Demonstrates adherence to safety policies.
    34. Demonstrates quality and effective communication with all team members.
    35. Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with other departments (Main Campus or SC, ED, Radiology, ICU, etc).
    36. Demonstrates flexibility and accepts change as needed.
    37. Remains attentive to detail, record keeping and required documentation inherent to position.
    38. Completes operative record promptly and accurately at the end of each case. Including complete charges with implants and consignment items.
    39. Fulfills all weekday and weekend on call requirements - this applies to FT and PT
    40. Responsible for staffing schedules, including nursing staff and support staff (including call shifts.
    41. Works cohesively with other supervisors/managers on staff schedules to ensure coverage across both Main OR and Surgicare

    Requirements:

    Education - Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN or enrollment in BSN program.

    Experience - 3-5 years OR experience preferred.

    Licensure - Current NYS RN license

    Physical Requirements - Able to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring patients may involve lifting of up to 50 or more pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
