Cardiac Catheterization Technologist performs diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations and other related procedures. Inserts small catheters through a needle into the blood vessels and into the heart so that X-rays, angiograms and other recordings can be taken to determine the heart's structure and function. Being a Cardiac Catheterization Technologist assist physicians with patient monitoring during surgery or procedures. Documents evaluation results, progress reports, treatment plans and other data using appropriate formats and systems. Additionally, Cardiac Catheterization Technologist some positions may require additional certifications such as: Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES). Requires an associate degree. Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Requires Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS). Typically requires State License. Typically reports to a manager. Qualified to survey and assess the anatomy and pathophysiology of the heart and great vessels by the use of cardiac ultrasound in the adult and/or pediatric patient. Must possess the technical knowledge and creative ability to manipulate and use ultrasound instruments to produce clinically useful diagnostic information. Must possess knowledge and background in ultrasound physics, instrumentation and clinical utility. Must possess knowledge of anatomy, physiology, hemodynamics and pathology of the cardiovascular system. Performs adult and/or pediatric trans-thoracic echocardiograms, trans-esophageal echocardiograms, and stress echocardiograms.
Education
Graduate of, or currently enrolled in, an allied health program is required.
Associates degree in allied health, applied science or completion of certificate program is preferred.
Experience
Experience in sonography/ultrasound is preferred.
Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers (ARDMS) OR a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is required. OR must be eligible to sit for the RDCS or RCS exam AND must obtain registry within 6 months of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) is required.
