Cardio-Pulmonary Perfusionist sets up and operates heart/lung machines that support organ function during cardiac surgery or other procedure where circulatory or respiratory function is disrupted. Operates equipment to produce bypass, coronary perfusion, recirculation or partial bypass, or to alter blood temperature, balance, or content. Being a Cardio-Pulmonary Perfusionist requires an advanced degree. Requires a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) credential. Additionally, Cardio-Pulmonary Perfusionist typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Cardio-Pulmonary Perfusionist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.   • JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION:  Performs the functions necessary for the support, treatment or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary circulatory system of patients.  Job is performed for the age population served, as defined in the department’s scope of service.

    • Employee demonstrates the use of proper safety techniques, equipment and devices and follows safety policies, procedures and plans.     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to: 

    1.  Assembles heart lung machine and ancillary equipment. 

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

    • Uses sterile technique according to OR standards.
    • Completes and documents safety checklist accurately.
    • Modifies the E/C circuit as necessary.

    2. Operates heart lung machine and conducts cardiopulmonary bypass.

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

    • Complies with OSHA safety standards.
    • Utilizes sterile technique according to OR standards.
    • Constantly monitors and observes the patient’s physiologic parameters making proper adjustments to ensure adequate perfusion of the patient.
    • Determines adequacy of heparinization prior to the initiation of EC bypass; administers additional heparin during bypass as necessary.
    • Draws blood samples and provides point of service testing during bypass according to protocol.
    • Administers blood and blood products during bypass according to protocol.
    • Administers drugs, cardioplegia, and parenteral solutions according to protocol and with proper documentation.        

     

    3. Operates systems and devices used in open heart and other surgical/medical procedures.

     

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

    • Sets up equipment and utilizes according to manufacturer’s DFU.
    • Complies with OSHA standards.
    • Utilizes sterile technique according to OR standards.
    • Performs the duties of hemodynamic and cardiac monitoring according to standards when necessary.

    4. Maintains inventory and equipment.

    PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

    • Restocks sterile supplies and cleans equipment daily.
    • Inspects equipment for abuse and wear monthly.
    • Takes corrective action to prevent equipment abuse and wear as necessary.
    • Reports equipment and facility problems to appropriate service personnel within 24 hours of occurrence.              

    Performs all other duties as required.
