This class is accountable for promoting student success, providing preventive services, and responding to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. The College and Career Counselor role, specifically, is in charge of planning post-secondary events and activities. The College and Career Counselor is a support for students with setting future goals; applying for college and/or career placements after high school.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
General Experience:
- Master's degree in counseling or closely related field required.
- Two (2) years of professional level experience working with special education or At-Risk students preferred.
LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Illinois Professional Educator License with School Counselor endorsement registered in Lake County.

- Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods and approaches, and currently researched best practices and strategies;
- Considerable knowledge of the academic and emotional needs of academically talented and struggling students and the ability to differentiate lesson plans to meet the needs of those individuals;
- Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned;
- Knowledge of classroom management techniques;
- Knowledge of learner outcomes;
- Knowledge of learning theory, students’ learning styles and needs, both academic and affective, and theories of multiple intelligences;

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data;
- Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services;
- Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession;
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal, social skills, goals and plans;
- Assists students in grade inquiries;
- Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data;
- Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning;
- Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis;
- Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders;
- Provides information for a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation;
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs;
- Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on State standards and current individual school data;
- Discusses credit requirements and enrollment processes with parent/guardian, student, and teachers;
- Discusses the comprehensive school counseling program with school administrators;
- Follows up with students working on incomplete coursework;
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process;
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals;
- Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders;
- Gathers results of the school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate;
- Monitors student academic performance, behavior and attendance and assists with appropriate interventions;
- Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills;
- Provides advice, guidance and support to students, parents/guardians and other stakeholders;
- Provides appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program;
- Provides direct services through the guidance curriculum, individual student planning and preventive and responsive services and in program management, system support and accountability;
- Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs;
- Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide integration of the State approved curriculum;
- Recommends and implements strategies for those students who are not “on track” and ensures that students stay “on-track”;
- Reports to teachers and administrators on feedback from students;
- Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program;
- Works with students that are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or health related issues;
- Communicates with special education case managers and teachers regarding specific accommodations;
- Administers appropriate tests to students and coordinates or assists with the building testing program as assigned;
- Assists in the development and implements a guidance program following District goals that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs and development of students;
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student conduct and support the teaching staff in developing reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures;
- Assures that students have the opportunity to explore, develop and express themselves intellectually, socially and emotionally;
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required;
- Conducts individual and group counseling sessions with students;
- Confers with colleagues, administration, students and/or parents when necessary;
- Coordinates student and family needs with community resources as appropriate (e.g. mental health, juvenile department, health department, etc.);
- Develops a consistent perception and common understanding of counseling and guidance functions and the role of the school counselor;
- Develops a resource file containing the names of individuals and agencies that may provide support for counseling and guidance programs;
- Encourages students to set and maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior;
- Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents/guardian concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students;
- Facilitates social and emotional growth among students, promoting academic and overall positive school experiences;
- Guides and counsels groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans;
- Implements the school counseling and guidance program curriculum;
- Interprets to stakeholders the objectives of the system’s comprehensive counseling and guidance program and the procedures for utilizing guidance services;
- Keeps abreast of laws, rules, policies and trends regarding guidance and counseling;
- Maintains accurate, complete and confidential records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations;
- Maintains current and appropriate resources for education stakeholders;
- Participates in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school;
- Participates in parent, teacher, and student conferences as requested and initiates such conferences as needed;
- Participates in the development and implementation of an individualized education program (IEP) as requested;
- Refers students with problems and their parents to appropriate specialists, special programs, or outside agencies;
- Performs related duties as required.
