Certified Medication Technician administers prescribed medications to patients and maintains related medical records under immediate supervision. Administers medications using proper dosage, route, timing, and techniques. Being a Certified Medication Technician verifies the identity of the patient receiving medication. Records the name of the drug, the dosage, the time of administration, and any other relevant information on specified forms or records. Additionally, Certified Medication Technician takes vital signs and observes patient to detect response to medication. Follows all relevant safety guidelines and regulations. Requires a high school diploma. Requires Certified Medication Technician (CMT) certification. Typically reports to a registered nurse or manager.     QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

     

    1.         Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Position requires demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide nursing care for residents pursuant to established standards of practice; demonstrate effective verbal and written communication in English; ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships; maintain records/files/reports.  Position requires full range of body motion including handling and moving residents; physical dexterity; good hand-eye coordination; standing and walking for extended periods; lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; corrected vision and hearing to normal range; ability to work under potentially stressful conditions and work irregular hours.

     

    2.                  Education: High School Diploma or GED.  Successful completion (with a 90% or better) of the DHS Medication Administration Course

     

    3.                   Experience: One year prior clinical experience preferred.

     

    4.                  Certificate/Licenses: (1) Valid Certification from DHS Medication Administration Course, (2) CPR certification, and (3) Valid Certfication from NCBDE Diabetes Education.

     

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The employee must be able to perform, including but not limited to, these essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation by the employer, without posing a direct threat to himself/herself or to others.

    1.  Work to achieve and maintain continuity of resident care by assisting in planning and exchanging information with other health professionals, as well as family members.

    2.  Provide physical and emotional support to the residents.

    3.  Observe and report significant changes in resident condition.

    4.  Assist with resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.

    5.  Document changes in condition, incidents, physician visits, and physician orders in nurse’s notes in resident charts where applicable.

    6.  Respond to emergency situations competently and calmly; exercise appropriate judgment.

    7.  Provide direct supervision to the care aides and assist in planning and coordinating quality care.

    8.  Integrate care with other services and assist with recreation and socialization programs.

    9.  Assure resident safety, including accounting for resident location at all times.

    10.  Provide general individual resident care and treatments.

    11. Check and store medications when the medication order is received.

    12.  Complete Incident and Accident Reports as necessary and report to administrator.

    13.  Develop and maintain a good working rapport with interdepartmental personnel to meet the needs of the residents.

    14.  Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, calm and positivity.

    15.  Inspect resident rooms, nurses’ station, and the facility common areas for cleanliness.

    16.  Attend in-service programs and staff meetings when scheduled.

    17.  Make resident rounds as required by each resident’s support plan.

    18.  Measure and record temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight and height as necessary.

    19.  Answer resident call lights promptly.

    20.  Provide an encouraging environment to promote reality orientation and self-help abilities.

    21.  Handle and move residents.

    22.  Lift and carry supplies.

    23.  Prepare and pass medications accurately and timely.

    24.  Ensure that items for resident use are properly recorded in resident supply book.

    25.  Practice safe working habits.

    26. Assist with planning physician appointments and transportation for said appointments.

    27. Ensure and advocate for resident rights.

    28. Ensure HIPPA confidentiality is maintained by speaking to authorized persons only regarding the resident.

    29. Provide wound care as necessary.

    30. Inventory medications and order medication refills as necessary to ensure there is no lapse between doses.

    31. Retrieve resident laundry to be washed, dried and returned within 24 hours.

    32. Disinfect assistive devices (such as walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen tubes) and ensure they are in working condition at all times.

    33. Assume responsibility for accountability of medication when on shift.

    34. File pertinent paperwork in medical chart.

    35. Adhere to facility policy of narcotic distribution, storage, and accounting methods.

    36. Assume legal accountability for residents and medication while on shift by providing signature.

    37. Ensure that any medication storage receptacles are locked when medication technician is not present.

    38. Report hospitalizations, change in conditions, and count narcotic distribution with oncoming shift.

    39. Accurately and timely administer insulin with each individual resident glucometer and disinfect after administration.

    40. Demonstrate safe needle recapping techniques and store sharps in designated sharps container.
