Certified Medication Technician administers prescribed medications to patients and maintains related medical records under immediate supervision. Administers medications using proper dosage, route, timing, and techniques. Being a Certified Medication Technician verifies the identity of the patient receiving medication. Records the name of the drug, the dosage, the time of administration, and any other relevant information on specified forms or records. Additionally, Certified Medication Technician takes vital signs and observes patient to detect response to medication. Follows all relevant safety guidelines and regulations. Requires a high school diploma. Requires Certified Medication Technician (CMT) certification. Typically reports to a registered nurse or manager.     JOB SUMMARY

    Under the supervision of a licensed nurse (RN/LPN), performs hands-on nursing care for the residents within the Cody Regional Health LTCC with emphasis on daily medication administration, personal hygiene and cleanliness, grooming and skin care.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Current Wyoming Certified Medication Aid Certification.

    EXPERIENCE

    Previous experience as a nursing assistant or medication aid in acute or long-term care preferred. Previous training and/or education in nursing related areas or as a medication aid required. 

    SKILLS

    Exhibit a special interest in the older adult and others requiring long term care. Has sufficient written and verbal communication skills to understand instructions and complete basic charting functions. Maintain confidentiality. Seek out and attends educational offerings to maintain necessary clinical skills.

    Medication assistant certification in the state of Wyoming

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Medication Administration
      • MA-C may provide routine medication administration to LTCC Residents as specified by the State of Wyoming Board of Nursing. MA-C may provide routine medication by the following routes:
      • Oral
      • Topical
      • Instillation into the eyes, ears, and nose
      • Rectal
      • Vaginal
    • Observation/Reporting
      • Note any unusual physical or behavioral changes in the residents, such as bruises, abrasions, rashes or reddened areas on the resident's skin; or an increased agitation, confusion, lethargy or other unusual behavior.
      • Report the above observations to the charge nurse in a timely manner.
      • Obtain vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure) as requested by the charge nurse and reports/records as appropriate.
      • Measure intake and output accurately and record on the appropriate clinical record.
      • Observe percent of meal consumed at every meal and records immediately.
      • Obtain accurate weights of residents as required.
      • Report any changes or unusual observations of the resident's mouth/oral cavity to the licensed nurse.
    • Personal Care
      • Assist with or perform personal hygiene for the resident, including washing the face, hands and all personal areas.
      • Assist with or perform proper grooming for the resident such as combing and styling hair and helping the resident to choose clean and appealing clothes, if necessary.
      • Assist the resident with a tub or total bed bath as instructed by the licensed nurse.
      • Give back rubs with approved lotions to all residents at night, and more frequently to those who are bedfast or highly immobile.
      • Shave the male resident on a daily basis if he is unable to shave himself.
      • Assist the resident to wash his/her face and hands after meals when necessary, and to properly dispose of bibs in the laundry hamper.
      • Assist or perform oral care for residents including brushing the teeth or dentures, properly labeling and storing dentures, using mouthwash or special procedures as instructed by the licensed nurse.
      • Answer call lights for all residents in an expeditious manner.
      • Perform active and passive range of motion for residents as requested by the licensed nurse.
    • Lifting and Moving Residents
      • Assist designated residents to ambulate as instructed by the licensed nurse.
      • Transport residents by wheelchair or other means to locations within the LTCC or Hospital.
      • Assist residents to transfer from bed to chair, etc., using approved methods.
      • Reposition residents who cannot do so satisfactorily themselves, at least every two hours.
      • Reposition and properly bridge residents who are in bed at least every two hours.
      • Reposition residents who are up in the chair at least every two hours, e.g., assist to lie down or ambulate as instructed by the licensed nurse.
      • Always perform lifting using approved methods with safety in mind to prevent injury to resident and/or self.
    • Nutrition
      • Match the resident with the proper diet before serving the meal.
      • Assist the resident at each meal to ensure an adequate nutritional intake; e.g., set up the meal, open cartons, cut food into small pieces if necessary.
      • Feed the resident who is unable to feed himself.
      • Record the percent of each meal consumed immediately after meals.
      • Pass nourishments/snacks to all residents receiving dietary supplements; record on the clinical record the percent of nourishment consumed.
      • Report to the charge nurse when poor appetite and/or fluid intake is noted.
      • Ensure that fresh water is always available for the resident, unless otherwise instructed; passes juices and water on each shift.
      • Always help to create a pleasant and comfortable atmosphere at mealtime.
    • Resident's Environment
      • Change bed linens at pre-determined intervals and/or when linens are soiled.
      • Dispose of soiled linens and clothes promptly and properly to reduce unwanted odors.
      • Know and follow policies and procedures related to infection control.
      • Immediately dispose of the contents of bedpans, urinals and/or commodes and rinses receptacles with an approved disinfectant prior to reuse.
      • Keep resident room neat and clean at all times; keep bedside stand neat and items properly stored inside.
      • Clearly mark and properly store resident’s personal belongings.
      • Properly mark and promptly launder clothes when soiled; hang clothes neatly in the resident's closet
      • Upon admission of a new resident, check to see that a glass and fresh water, clean towels and washcloths, etc., are ready for the resident.
      • Always fasten the resident's call light within reach of the resident.
      • Know and is able to carry out approved emergency procedures.
      • Report all unusual occurrences breakage and damage to equipment immediately and remove broken items from area of use as necessary.
    • Bowel and Bladder
      • Assist residents to the toilet or commode per assignment and as requested. Toilet residents upon arising in AM, prior to and after meals, and at night.
      • Change incontinent residents after every episode; perform adequate perineal hygiene for residents incapable of self-care.
      • Record bowel and bladder function after every shift.
      • Perform catheter care using approved procedures.
      • Complete assigned duties such as maintaining utility areas and other miscellaneous assignments.
      • Report all unusual occurrences, breakage and damage.

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

    • Attend in-service meetings.
    • May be required to perform other related duties for which the individual is qualified.
