  • Position Summary: The Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Mid-Wife/Physician Assistant works in collaboration with clinicians, Patient Services Assistants and Clinic Case Manager to provide general review of systems, sexual health and reproductive care services and education for teens, men and women.  Supports CAPSLO’s mission by providing direct patient care for the clinics. Required Education and Experience: Must be a Licensed Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Mid-wife. License & Certifications: Must have current Medical License. California State Dispensing Certification preferred or appropriate pharmacology course for eligibility for State dispensing number. Must provide current CPR certification prior to beginning employment.  Must have a valid California Driver’s License, a reliable insured vehicle available for business use (mileage reimbursed) and acceptable driving record. A DMV printout and proof of insurance is required. Essential Functions: Elicits a complete or follow-up medical history on each patient. Counsels patients regarding contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and menopausal issues. Performs screening and physical exams for thyroid, heart and lungs.  Performs a comprehensive examination of the breast, abdomen, female pelvis, male genitals and extremities. Inserts and removes intrauterine devices and subdermal contraceptive implants. Is able to fit patients for diaphragms.  Recognizes associated gynecologic and non-gynecologic diseases, common complaints and physical abnormalities, including use of microscope to perform wet mounts. Makes referrals to the appropriate medical or social resource(s). Answers and documents telephone calls from patients regarding medical problems related to reproductive health and wellness. Provides instructions to patients in the technique of self-breast examination, birth control methods, medications and Hormone Replacement Therapy. Assists with abnormal follow up as directed by the Clinic Director. Provides education on nutrition, exercise and good health practices. Additional Responsibilities and Duties:  Attends, Medical Quality Assurance (QA) meetings (as needed) and clinic staff meetings. Assists with QA projects as directed by the Clinic Director. Assists with training of new clinicians, Patient Services Assistants and Teen Wellness Providers as directed by the Clinic Director. Must complete and follow CAPSLO Family Planning “Infection Control Training” procedures and protocols regarding potential exposure of this position to bodily fluids or blood-borne pathogens. Must use reasonable precautions in the performance of one’s duties and adhere to all applicable safety rules and practices; and act in such a manner as to assure at all times maximum safety to one’s self, fellow employees, clients and children. Must understand, uphold, and continue working toward accomplishing the mission, strategic goals and performance measures of the agency. Performs other duties as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge: Must have reproductive healthcare experience. Must have knowledge of human sexuality, family planning, male services, menopausal services and other related health issues. Must have knowledge of Basic Health assessment. Skills: Must possess basic computer skills and willingness to learn new/software applications. Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate an open-minded attitude and work in a non-judgmental environment. Must be able to relate well to all people of the community regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, age, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability or socio-economic level.  Work Environment: Works with infectious materials. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical: Requires intermittent sitting, walking, standing, twisting and bending.  Fine hand manipulation required, as well as grasping, pushing and pulling, reaching above and below shoulder level.   Requires special audio and visual requirements to utilize microscope and stethoscopes.   Lifting and carrying of less than 30 pounds.   Travel: Must be able to travel to all CAPSLO Clinics. Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.  Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or sign a COVID-19 vaccination declination form. Based on program, a current TB skin test/Chest X-Ray may be required.  Employment is contingent upon meeting all applicable job requirements and background requirements. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment.  Upon hire, agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment.
