Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant assists an Occupational Therapist with rehabilitative activities for patients who may have developmental, physical and emotional impairments or who are recovering from injury. Prepares adaptive equipment used during treatment and supports patient activities. Being a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant documents therapeutic activities and details of patients progress. Requires an associate degree. Additionally, Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant requires NBCOT Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) certification. Typically reports to an occupational therapist. Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Certification and/or licensing in the position's specialty is the main requirement. Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited college with a BA or associate degree in Occupational Therapy that the AOTA recognizes.
- Recognized by the NBCOT as a designated COTA (if state mandated)
- COTA holds a current license and/or registration as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant in-state as applicable.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive treatment to patients under the supervision of an OTR and according to state guidelines.
- Assist OT in identifying appropriate patients and referring them to rehab accordingly.
- Document patient’s daily participation and progress on progress note in an accurate and timely fashion and obtain the co-signature of the OTR.
- Ensure MD orders are obtained for treatments, re-certifications, and discharges.
- Assist with other documentation requirements as indicated and according to state guidelines.
