Certified Respiratory Therapist assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Certified Respiratory Therapist also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is an impairment. Requires an associate degree and a credential of Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). Additionally, Certified Respiratory Therapist may be expected to maintain a CPR certification. Typically reports to a manager. Certified Respiratory Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Position Summary: Renders independent professional cardiopulmonary care/diagnostic procedures to patients in support of total medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital. At all times, works under medical direction where final and ultimate authority judgement and clinical decision-making are the responsibility of the physician.
Position Accountabilities:
1) Be familiar with and able to competently perform all clinical/ technical services provided by the Respiratory Care Department.
2) Assure that all therapy is administered in accordance with the prescription of a physician.
3) Receive verbal orders from physicians by way of telephone or personal meetings and transcribe such orders on patient's chart prior to initiating therapy.
4) Enforce all safety rules and regulations, assuring that hospital personnel, respiratory care personnel, patients and visitors are made aware of precautions.
5) Assist physicians, upon request, in assessing individual patients and designing appropriate therapy regimens.
6) Perform cardiopulmonary care and diagnostic procedures as assigned by Department Manager or other appropriate authority.
7) Perform other clinical procedures, consistent with the scope of practice of cardiopulmonary care.
8) Enforce compliance with all quality assurance program standards.
9) Assure necessary equipment is available, maintained and cleaned, in operable condition and ready for immediate use.
10) Maintain all equipment according to preventive maintenance program.
11) Upon receipt of physician's order, assure its accuracy, completeness and timely implementation.
12) Transcribe verbal orders onto Physician's Order Sheet, including date, time, and signature, so they may be countersigned by the physician.
13) Implement patient chart and department records as outlined in the policy and procedures manual.
14) Assure that all cleaning procedures are performed as outlined in the policy and procedure manual.
15) Enforce all infection control procedures as outlined in the policy and procedures manual.
Education/Experience
High School graduate or equivalent
Licensed as Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
