Certified Respiratory Therapist assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Certified Respiratory Therapist also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is an impairment. Requires an associate degree and a credential of Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT). Additionally, Certified Respiratory Therapist may be expected to maintain a CPR certification. Typically reports to a manager. Certified Respiratory Therapist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. The certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) is responsible for providing total respiratory care for patients with carrying degrees of respiratory deficiencies. CRT must exercise knowledge of respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Applies learned theory, principles, and techniques to all types of respiratory care. Uses related equipment for respiratory therapy. Responsible for providing basic cardiac diagnostic services. CRT is a Code Blue team member.
Job Responsibilities:
A. Attends rounds session with medical staff for patients on long term artificial ventilation. Confers with physicians regarding patient condition and care.
B. Participates as a member of emergency teams by providing respiratory care in emergency resuscitation and cardiac arrest cases. Confers with physicians regarding critical and emergency patient care.
C. Provides lung physiotherapy, including breathing exercises, percussion and postural drainage in the rehabilitation care of patients.
D. Plans and presents lectures and demonstrations to other respiratory therapists.
E. Evaluate patients for respiratory care services.
F. Performs arteriotomies.
G. Perform pulmonary function studies.
H. Provide basic cardiac diagnostic services.
