UMKC enters this exciting phase with a remarkable track record of growth, having more than doubled its research expenditures over the past five years. Notably, the university garnered $147 million in research and sponsored project awards last year. The recent designation of both Kansas City and Missouri as tech hubs by the U.S. Economic Development Administration underscores the region's commitment to innovation and technological advancement.

The foundation of UMKC has been steeped in research since its inception. The State of Missouri has granted unique permission to the University of Missouri System’s four universities, including UMKC, to conduct research and grant doctoral-level degrees. UMKC researchers are actively addressing some of society’s most pressing issues, spanning research on advancements in cancer treatment, the impact of sound in operating rooms, the digital and public humanities, countermeasures against drone attacks and how viruses evade detection by host cells.

As the sole public research university in Greater Kansas City, UMKC is poised to elevate its commitment to innovation, entrepreneurism, and community engagement to drive progress across various sectors, including technology, health care, business, economic development, the arts and education. UMKC seeks a visionary scholar to lead and inspire these endeavors, executing a strategic vision to propel both the university and society forward.

Central to the success of the incoming leader is the imperative to leverage UMKC’s impressive research momentum, supported by both the campus and the community. We anticipate achieving recognition as a Carnegie Research I institution in the forthcoming 2025 Carnegie research designation, reserved for institutions operating at the highest level of research intensity. This achievement not only symbolizes excellence but also unlocks additional opportunities to advance the university's overarching mission.

In summary, UMKC is in search of a dynamic and forward-thinking Vice Chancellor for Research. This individual will play a pivotal role in capitalizing on the institution's current successes, fostering a culture of innovation, and strategically positioning UMKC as a nationally recognized leader in research and academia. The chosen leader will significantly influence the future trajectory of the UMKC research enterprise and its broader impact on the community and society at large.

Working closely with the Vice Chancellor of Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, Maria Meyers, in many of these efforts.
    4. Mission-Critical Research Areas: UMKC's commitment to addressing pressing issues, such as cancer treatment, safety in operating rooms, protection against drone attacks and viral detection, highlights the diverse and impactful research conducted at the university. The new leader should support and further develop these areas of research excellence and identify new areas of research focus.
    5. Community Engagement: Engaging with the local community and fostering collaborations with industry partners is crucial. This not only enhances the impact of UMKC research but also contributes to the broader socioeconomic development of the region.
