      Reporting Relationships

      Job Summary
      Responsible for working with the Executive Director of College Communications to develop positive internal and external communications and engagement strategies via a comprehensive, strategic communications plan that reinforces and builds the positive image of the college in the community. The position also serves as the Deputy Freedom of Information Act Officer for the college and assists in identifying and pursuing strategic outreach activities in the community.
      Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Related duties may be assigned.
      • Assist in the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan for the college that includes a proactive, consistent approach to telling the RVC story. Leverage communications/public relations to support overall institutional reputation and enrollment objectives.
      • Develop and maintain effective relationships with college faculty and staff, as well as the communities served by RVC.
      • Be strategically visible and engaged as a college representative in the regional community.
      • Assess community attitudes and awareness of RVC. Use results to make data-informed decisions and create communications and engagement plans with measurable outcomes.
      • Ensure that the message of the college is consistent, cohesive, and aligned with the strategic direction of the institution and its partners in industry and the community.
      • Regularly connect with college faculty, staff, and student leaders to proactively seek out positive stories to share with both internal and external audiences.
      • Assist with emergency communications efforts and identifying potential threats, both physical and reputation based.
      • Assist College departments in event planning and coordinate Communications and Marketing support as needed and appropriate.
      • Write, manage, and distribute content for internal communications, such as RVC Daily News (e-mail news for employees) and RVC Student Weekly (e-mail news for students).
      • Collaborate with Information Technology (IT) to manage the content on the College’s intranet.
      • Track and monitor department projects.
      • Assist the executive director in planning, writing, and disseminating news releases for local media and internal distribution; including pitching original story ideas to communicate the college’s message and secure media support.
      • Identify media event opportunities, and assist in scheduling and coordinating press conferences as necessary.
      • Monitor, track and report out on media coverage and public relations efforts.
      • Create graphics and edit photos for content as needed, working with the internal design team when necessary.
      • Serve as the Deputy Freedom of Information Act Officer for the college.
      • Serve on College committees as appropriate and assigned.
      • Be a cross-trained member of the Communications and Marketing team.
      • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

      Minimum Qualifications
      Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field or academic discipline.
      • Minimum of 4-5 years media relations, public relations or organizational communication experience.
      • Candidate must be able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines ad well as possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
      • Demonstrated ability to work with people of all backgrounds and abilities.
      • Understanding of the community college mission and the community/district it serves.
      • Interviewed candidates for this position will provide a portfolio of written pieces and/or examples of their work, and will be asked to provide an on-site writing sample.
