  • GENERAL DUTIES:

    This employee will assist patients and families through the process of recovery from substance use disorders and other addictions. The employee will work closely with a variety of clinicians, licensed social workers, and administrative staff to provide patients with education/counseling as an adjunct to medication-assisted treatment. Participates in and may provide input on the development of various opioid awareness, intervention, and prevention programs. Employee may be required to staff other Addiction Outreach Clinic (AOC) locations as needed. Performs other related duties as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSAs):

    Knowledge of:
    Strategies of intervention, prevention, and rehabilitation treatment
    Modern principles and practices of counseling and/or therapy
    Methods of conducting individual counseling, therapy, and presenting life skills Methods of conducting group therapy and group processes
    Principles and practices of program development and implementation
    Basic social research methods and evaluation practices
    Pertinent federal, state, and local public health resources
    Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
    Principles and procedures of basic report writing and record-keeping
    Knowledge of drug testing to ensure the patient is following treatment plans and medical instructions
    The fundamentals of chemical dependency

    Skill to:
    Operate appropriate computer equipment; use properly all related hardware and software
    Operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty
    Time management skills Active listening skills
    Use computer software to measure and track patient samples and data
    Consult with supervision and other professionals regarding client treatment and treatment services

    Ability to:
    Identify, analyze, and understand various program strategies in intervention, prevention, and rehabilitation
    Conduct individual and group counseling sessions; if applicable
    Interpret and apply pertinent federal, state, and local laws codes, rules, and regulations
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
    Prepare for and make public presentations
    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    Each applicant must be at least 18 years of age and possess a High School Diploma or GED. The applicant must also be minimally certified as a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant I (CDCA I). After a minimum of ten months the employee must complete the application to advance to a Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant II (CDCA II). CDCA II certification must be maintained and renewed every two years.

    WORKING AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
    Environmental Conditions: Office/site environment; work closely with others; exposure to potentially hostile environments. Physical Conditions: Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing or sitting for prolonged periods; visual acuity; must be able to speak in front of large groups.

    EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
    Conducts individual and group counseling sessions to assess client/patient physical and mental health needs; identifies, researches, and analyzes information provided by the client(s) within various awareness, prevention, and intervention programs including, violence, substance abuse, life skills, child abuse, and general health programs
    Coordinates, organizes, and plans presentations for community groups, health professionals, and employees; answers questions and provides information to the public
    Obtains and maintains files of data from outside agencies; conducts a variety of research studies and investigations; develops and recommends modifications to programs, policies, and procedures
    Assists those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient, and professional manner Perform related duties as assigned
    Assesses and documents pertinent information regarding patient sobriety and works with the patient to gather their drug use history relating to any problems with substance abuse
    Provides information to the team for treatment planning and helps the patient identify the problems that require resolution
    Discusses with the Supervisor and develops a agree upon rehabilitation treatment process by establishing short and long-term treatment goals
    Works closely with management to determine the resources available to address the rehabilitation service needs of the patient
    Performs crisis intervention which may involve taking immediate action in response to any serious or crucial crises that may come up during treatment Provides patient education, resources, and information to groups and individuals who may have issues with substance abuse. These resources should be aimed at informing and educating the general public and letting them know what resources and services are available.
    Documents the results of assessments and treatment.
    Counselors are responsible for taking notes and keeping track of other data relating to each patient
    Maintains individual counseling charts on each patient
    May perform, oversee, and/or process drug testing dips
    Provides counseling coverage for other AOC locations as needed. Performs other duties as assigned
