Chemical Plant Operator controls equipment and systems that process chemical substances and materials into products. Operates equipment and monitors the production process to ensure efficient and safe output. Being a Chemical Plant Operator follows standard operating procedures and performs in process quality checks to identify and resolve issues during processing. Troubleshoots problems with equipment, respond to system notifications and makes required adjustments as needed. Additionally, Chemical Plant Operator enters required production data and information into logs. May unload or move materials. Follows all procedures for safe material handling and required safety gear. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or team leader. The Chemical Plant Operator works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     Position Overview

    Assist the plant foreperson with the daily operations, loadout of material and upkeep of the plant. Individual will also perform repair and maintenance duties that include cutting, welding, and metal fabrication.

    Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

    The criteria for evaluation in this position include but are not limited to the following :

    • Ability to operate various pieces of heavy equipment, accurately, efficiently, and safely.
    • Maintain cleanliness of plant, equipment, and surrounding area.
    • Lubricate and perform general maintenance on the equipment.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Ability to detect safety hazards and malfunctions and respond accordingly.
    • Perform daily workplace and pre-shift examinations.
    • Strict adherence to MSHA rules and regulations.

    Other Requirements

    • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
    • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
    • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
    • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
    • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
    • Strict adherence to Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
    • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
    • Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Shelly Company employees. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedule.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

    Education and Experience

    Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and / or MSHA.

    Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position : Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout / Tagout, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, use of Seatbelt and harnesses when required.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

    Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Physical and Vision Requirements

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand;

    walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, climb, or balance.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee must regularly lift and / or move around 25 pounds and may also have to move over 50 pounds with equipment assistance.

    Work Environment

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.

    The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require protective equipment.
