  • Duties

    • Start, operate, adjust, and stop single or multiple fueled water and fire tube boilers including all auxiliary, pollution control, and other equipment in a steam boiler plant.
    • Maintain and repair all Central Steam Plant systems and equipment to meet critical requirement levels.
    • Install, maintain, and repair complex system of valves, piping, and fittings associated with power and heating boiler operations including boiler power piping, high and low pressure steam, feed, condensate, fuel oil, natural gas, compressed air.
    • Remove asbestos containing materials such as pipe and tank insulation and refractory, etc., in accordance with Public Works standard operating procedures.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • Appointment is subject to a Tier 1 NACI background and is required throughout the appointment of this position.
    • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
    • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
    • The employee must possess and maintain a current License, or equivalent certificate to support operations of Boilers with a capacity of 300MBTU/HR.
    • The employee must possess and maintain a current License, or equivalent certificate to support operations of Boilers with a capacity of 50MBTU/HR.
    • This position requires travel to other duty locations approximately 5% of the time.
    • The employee may be required to work rotating shifts, to include nights, weekends and Holidays.

    WG-08: Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant Operator without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform common Boiler maintenance. Ability to perform routine maintenance or repairs to auxiliary equipment e.g., lubricate moving parts, replace filters, replace or adjust drive belts; accurately record pertinent data such as, unusual conditions observed, safety shutdowns, repairs, or adjustments required or made. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    WG-10: Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant Operator without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform some tasks including operating and monitoring of high-pressure Boiler Plants and auxiliary equipment. Ability to recognize and detect abnormal high pressure boiler plant and steam system operating conditions and take immediate actions to eliminate emergency situations and restore normal operating conditions; collect and test water samples and determine the amount and type of chemicals needed to control or meet various boiler chemistry parameters and achieve desired results. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

    Selective Placement Factor: This position has selective placement factor which must be met prior to employment and for continued employment. Your answers to the questions in this section will indicate your understanding of, or possession of, these requirements.

    **The WG-08 Boiler Plant Operator position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a Class III Operating Engineer Certificate or equivalent.     **The WG-10 Boiler Plant Operator position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a Class II Operating Engineer Certificate or equivalent. The certified operator shall be limited to operation of boiler plants not exceeding an aggregate of 300MBTU/HR.     - PHYSICAL EFFORT: Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment; e.g. auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Work requires moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, kneeling, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts, equipment, and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.

    - WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee normally works indoors on concrete surfaces. Occasionally works outside for short periods. When working outside is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Works on catwalks and ladders. Employee is subject to high temperature, high noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, oil, fuel, and fumes in the work area. Exposed to toxic effects of refrigerants, scalding hot water, and steam temperatures up to 365°F. Subject to cuts and abrasions from use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, and contact with pipes and boilers. Must be able to work using/wearing applicable PPE (hearing, eye, fall, respiratory protection, safety shoes, hard hat, gloves, etc.)
