Description:
We are seeking an experienced Asphalt Chemist whose role is to perform testing of continue to improve current product offering, develop future products and to support and improve existing roofing manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of lab tests, ensuring that all testing is completed accurately and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. As a key member of our team, the Asphalt Chemist will work closely with other departments and stakeholders to ensure the efficient and effective use of company resources.
Lab Responsibilities:
· Analyze and interpret test results, and ensure that all testing is completed accurately and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
· Maintain lab equipment and supplies, and ensure that all lab-related activities are carried out in accordance with best practices and standards
· Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure that lab testing aligns with project requirements and timelines
· Communicate lab-related information to stakeholders
· Identify and report any quality control issues or concerns
· Perform raw material testing to include, but not limited to softening point, penetration, viscosity, stain, flash, separation, tensile, tears, mixing/blend work, and coupon preparation
· Review quality control metrics and improve the product performance to reduce loss through scrap or warranty claims
· Ensure maintenance of Laboratory Certification through review lab standards and taking necessary actions to ensure equipment is calibrated and working properly, and that technicians and operators are following approved test methods
· Inspect the quality of incoming raw materials to minimize the risk of creating defects
· Assist in development of new products
· Perform basic calculations for blending
· Develop innovative solutions that enable improved performance, reduced cost and increased efficiency
· Oversee the research work in the lab
· Oversee all trials for process improvement, raw materials, and new products
· Assist plant and technical teams with troubleshooting
· Recognize and solve problems affecting production
· Generate and maintain Daily Production Reports
· Interface with 3rd party auditors
· Maintain equipment calibrations and certifications
· Maintain/improve quality control program and documentation
· Maintain finished product Specification books
· Provide training as necessary
Material Sourcing
· Source and qualify asphalts and monitor compatibility
· Screen potential raw material suppliers for suitability and potential new products
· Provide product adjustments on an as-needed basis
Reporting
· Provide monthly raw material costs of finished product
· Implement and report QC statistical analyses
· Gather and Maintain data
· Interface with Technical services on current and future product offerings
Continuous Improvement
· Modifying current products to meet client needs
· Establish an overall cost reduction plan for current and future products
· Product improvement and development of both APP and SBS Modified bitumen to include self-adhered membranes
Required Experience
· 2-3 years experience in the Asphalt, Asphalt emulsion, and Polymer modification of asphalt
· 3-5 years related manufacturing experience
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Experience in modified roofing industry – especially polymer modification of asphalt
· Thorough understanding of safety requirements, and able to respond to normal hazards and take appropriate precautions
· Proven ability to successfully achieve and exceed goals
· Must have high energy and be able to adapt to a changing environment
· Computer skills mandatory: Word, Excel, Outlook
