  • Executive Director Position Description

    The Executive Director (ED) of the Oyster River Youth Association (ORYA) is a management position responsible for the operations of the organization including managing all staff, planning and implementing all youth sport activities, managing key stakeholder relationships, and overseeing the financial operations. The ED is expected to be visible in the community, ensuring that the ORYA remains a highly respected organization, while identifying and addressing the solutions for community needs through programs and services. The successful candidate must be able to manage ORYA with fiscally sound practices while maintaining superior program options and outstanding customer service. This individual is responsible for the general administration of the organization including staff supervision and training, budgeting, expense control, income generation, program development and quality control, volunteer coordination, community relations, collaborations, long-range planning, and facility maintenance.

    The ED will also provide direction and leadership for the achievement of ORYA goals in accordance with the policies, procedures, and standards established by the Board that will advance the mission of the ORYA.

    ORYA Mission Statement

    • The Oyster River Youth Association provides inclusive, fair, diverse, and developmentally appropriate recreational programs to the youth of Durham, Lee, and Madbury, NH. ORYA meets the changing needs of the children and families in our community for sports and recreational activities by acquiring and maintaining facilities, promoting volunteerism, and seeking collaborative and strategic partnerships.

    Essential Functions

    • Build relationships with and among community members, respond to inquiries and solve problems.
    • Manage office functions including office management, hours, and office activities.
    • Plan, conduct, and expand a wide variety of programs that reflect the ORYA mission, values, and service to the community. Ensure all programs intentionally support strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living or social responsibility while meeting the needs of the Oyster River community.
    • Ensure effective systems are in place to measure the quality of programs and services and to receive and respond to member concerns and comments, in a timely and appropriate manner.

    Budget & Financial Management

    • Prepare, develop, and administer the budget, exercising necessary controls to ensure operations that are consistent with the goal of a balanced operational budget.
    • Work with ORYA Board and bookkeeping services to plan and manage program budgets, monitor monthly expenses and year-round forecasts for program needs, repairs, and upgrades, facility and equipment repairs, utility costs, and capital improvement costs.
    • Revenue enhancement – Work with the ORYA Board on increasing and diversifying the income stream for the organization including fundraising, grants, towns, member fees and advertising.

    Community Development

    • Maintain, support, and recruit members for the various program Advisory Groups.
    • Represent and promote ORYA in the local community and continue to develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develop, maintain, and model collaborative relationships where possible and strategically beneficial.
    • Communicate the benefits and impact of ORYA so we are known as the leading charitable organization in the three towns.
    • Broaden ORYA’s brand such that local businesses see the benefits of sponsoring and/or donating to the organization.

    Facility Oversight & Risk Management

    • Work with appropriate groups to provide program facilities for members that are safe, clean, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive.
    • Oversee the upkeep, maintenance and safety of all equipment, supplies, and grounds.
    • Keep current all safety and background check policies to be up to date with sport national standards.
    • Communicate, schedule, and maintain positive relationships with third party vendors.

    Strategic Goals

    • Cultivate strategic relationships partnerships and community collaborations.
    • Further the goals and mission of the organization by working to expand facilities and offerings.

    • Continue to maintain the relaxed, fun, and involved culture we have created to continue attracting great volunteers, coaches, and participants.

    Volunteer, Staff & Intern Development

    • Lead staff, volunteers, and interns in ways to create extraordinary experiences for all who come in contact with the ORYA.
    • Recruit, hire, direct, and train a strong and capable team to deliver innovative high quality/volume programs and member services to drive the future growth needs of the organization.
    • Provide leadership to the staff, interns, and volunteers for carrying out the organizational, program and operational strategies of the association’s strategic plan.
    • Develop strategies to motivate volunteers by seeking opportunities to recognize staff and show appreciation.
