    • You will serve as the Museum's Collections Manager and be responsible for the care and management of art, artifacts, and other three-dimensional materials in the museum's collections.
    • You will manage collections that contribute to an understanding and appreciation of the naval history of the United States and the role that the Enlisted Sailor plays in this history.
    • You will report directly to the Director, National Museum of the American Sailor (NMAS).
    • You will serve as the primary advisor and subject matter expert on all matters relating to the museum's artifact collections care and management.
    • You will research, identify, and describe artifacts using Chenhall's Guide to Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging and Navy standards, using an automated EMu collections management database
    • You will clean artifacts, supervise or create artifact mounts
    • You will measure and record environmental data in museum spaces, establishing and enforcing environmental controls for artifacts in storage and on exhibit.
    • You will transport or arrange transportation of artifacts arrange conservation work by professional conservators, and implementing pest management and emergency response procedures to preserve artifacts
    • You will develop themes, scripts, labels, and related scholarly material to support the creation and presentation of temporary and permanent exhibits
    • You will conduct research which encompasses the history of the U.S. Navy's Enlisted Sailor and the history of the U.S. Navy in the American Midwest

    Qualifications

    In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement for GS-1015 series and meeting the criteria for being a Recent Graduate as detailed in the "Education" section of this announcement your application must demonstrate:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing work using thorough knowledge of the accepted principles, practices, standards, techniques, and philosophy of museums to perform or assist in performing the following:
    1) Exercising responsibility for the care and management of art, artifacts, and other three-dimensional materials in a museum's collections.
    2) Researching, identifying, and describing artifacts using Chenhall's Guide to Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging
    3) Utilizing and inputting data into a collections management database
    4) Measure and recording environmental data in museum spaces
    5) Communicating effectively orally and in writing

    Education

    There is a Basic Requirement for the GS-1015, Museum Curator Series in the Federal Service.
    You must meet the following:
    Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.
    OR
    Have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field plus appropriate experience or additional education.
    OR
    Have four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4-year course of study in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.

    You must also meet the requirements for a Recent Graduate appointment.
    Recent graduates who completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate within the last two years of the closing date of the announcement. Also, veterans who were unable to apply within two years of receiving their my degree, due to military service obligations but are still within six years of graduation completion date with a qualifying degree.

    You may qualify using education to substitute for Specialized Experience if you have the following:

    Additional information

    You will serve as a MUSEUM CURATOR at the National Museum of the American Sailor (NMAS) which is part of the Naval History and Heritage Command. NMAS's mission is to select, collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the United States Navy with particular emphasis on the Navy's Enlisted Sailor. The duty station is Great Lakes, IL.

    This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

    This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
