    Position Overview

    The incumbent will report to the President & Chief Executive Officer and be a member of the executive management team.  The incumbent will work with the senior management team, governing board, staff, and community to define the organization's vision and direction.  He/she/they will lead the design and implementation of strategies to identify funding sources needed to finance the growth and development of Buffalo Urban League to enhance visibility, funding, and engagement. 

    The Buffalo Urban League recently unveiled its plan to build a new $25 million campus headquarters on the East Side.  The Chief Development Officer will be critical in moving the fund-raising initiative forward. 

    Responsibilities:

    • In concert with the board, CEO, and other stakeholders develop and implement a strategic development plan.
    • Oversee communications, public relations, and volunteer recruitment that support the message, vision, and mission of Buffalo Urban League.
    • Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization's values, vision, and mission.
    • Manage the operations development function efficiently and oversee development activities in coordination with staff.
    • Establish a balanced mix of donor sources and fundraising programs to attract and retain donors and fundraising volunteers for programs such as but not limited to planned giving and the annual fund. 
    • Identify and develop donor prospects, including corporate, foundation and public entities.
    • Ensure the sound fiscal operation of development function including timely, accurate and comprehensive development of charitable contributions income and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring and implementation.
    • Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the fund development program.
    • Identify, implement, and maintain a database management system.
    • Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals.
    • Support, align, and recruit membership for the auxiliary programs including the Young Professionals, the Little Leaguers and the Guild.  
    • Oversee fund raising events.

     

    Qualifications


    • A bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, communications, philanthropy, or a related field.    Funding certification is a plus.
    • A minimum of ten years in development, and experience overseeing a major capital campaign with three years leading the function are required. Comprehensive management skills are required including but not limited to short and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, and volunteers. 
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Excellent presentation skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with donors, board members, staff, and volunteers.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and producing charitable contributions.
    • Demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, and, development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting.
    • Analytical thinking and ability to analyze data.
