ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION
Provide leadership to clinical staff that will support, create ownership of goals and encourage active participation in decisions while ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and quality standards. Serve as a member of the executive leadership team and participate in functional decision-making processes to promote the hospital mission. Advise on healthcare clinical matters that could have an impact on the success of the hospital. The position requires availability or delegated availability to respond after working hours and to take call on a rotational basis.
INTERACTION
Primarily Interacts with: administration, Board of Directors, physicians, employees, clinical and non-clinical departments, patients, visitors, vendors and volunteers
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
- Establish standards for clinical practices, quality and safety programs and maintain authority, accountability and responsibility for clinical services.
- Manage day-to-day operations of clinical operations of the hospital, including the general supervision of all nursing personnel in the following areas: Med/Surg, ER, OR, and control of medications/drugs by nursing personnel. Also responsible for oversight of the Lab, Pharmacy, Social Work, Cardiac and Respiratory departments.
- Articulate the link between metrics and goals and national quality initiatives/metrics. Target outcomes that are evidence-based.
- Collaborate with direct reports to establish departmental goals and objectives that are supportive of the organization’s strategic plan.
- Maintain departmental reports and record and collect statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes.
- Develop and recommend department operating budget and ensures departments operate within budget.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of the annual budget to include staffing, capital expenditures, and supplies.
- Support all endeavors to stay in compliance with regulatory agencies.
- Direct the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures to promote communication and adequate information flow.
- Coordinate Nursing Service Performance Improvement.
- Oversee management of Utilization Review program.
- Support all aspects of customer service to promote and insure high customer satisfaction scores.
- Represent the hospital through community involvement.
- Direct care and maintenance of department facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Keep lines of communication open. Recognize the type of information that needs to be reported and report it in a timely manner. Relay pertinent information to subordinates to keep them informed about important changes impacting patient care or hospital business.
- Work closely with the staff to promote a harmonious relationship between nursing and physicians.
- Encourage growth and development of staff.
- Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
- Participate in hospital/medical staff committee meetings as required.
- Attend and serve on professional/civic service organizations as a hospital representative.
- Responsible for accuracy of department payroll; including approval via KRONOS
- Provide exemplary customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA.
- Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations, inter-departmental objectives and infection control policies.
- Cordially demonstrate timeliness and professionalism in appearance, communications, and actions during all interactions and with all individuals and entities.
- Solve practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form.
- Attend meetings as required.

Requirements
ABILITY TO USE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS, MACHINES: Computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, scanner, printer, calculator and other standard office equipment. Blood Pressure Cuffs, stethoscope, syringes, IV pumps, feeding pumps, beds, scales, lifts, hyper/hypothermia units, glucose monitors, PCA pumps, suction equipment, ventilators, crash cart, miscellaneous medical equipment and DME.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Education:
- Bachelor degree in Nursing required; Master’s degree in healthcare administration, nursing, business or related field preferred.
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing as evidenced by RN state licensure.
- BLS, ACLS, PALS/ENCP and TNCC certifications.
Experience:
- Minimum of three years of progressive leadership experience that is comparable to the Chief Nursing Officer’s authority and responsibility, commensurate with the scope and complexity of the hospital.
- Five years of nursing care (critical care preferred) experience: treatment experience with the complex medical, surgical patient population, and comprehensive acute medical and therapeutic/rehabilitative care management
