    From sandy beaches and salt marshes to freshwater swamps and farmland, the Coastal Conservation League is working to respond to rapid growth and development, as well as impacts from a changing climate on the South Carolina coastal plain. We work from our headquarters in Charleston, our legislative office in Columbia, our South Coast office in Beaufort, which covers Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton counties, our North Coast office, which works across Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Williamsburg, and Florence counties, and our food hub, GrowFood Carolina, in Charleston. Our team of professionals works across the coastal plain to promote clean energy, protect land, water and wildlife, build strong cities and towns, and support local food and farmers to build healthy, resilient communities.

     

    Our mission is to protect the health of the natural resources of the South Carolina coastal plain and ensure a high quality of life for all of the people who live in and love this special place.

     

    Summary:

    The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for managing the financial operations of the Coastal Conservation League (CCL), ensuring the organization’s financial health and sustainability. This role will oversee all financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance requirements. The CFO will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.


    Essential Functions:


    Financial Management

    • Develop and implement financial strategies that support CCL’s mission and goals
    • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
      • Oversee budgeting, and the implementation of budgets, so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
    • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
    • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the Coastal Conservation League’s strategic plan.
    • Engage the Director of Development to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections.
    • Engage the board finance committee around issues, trends, and changes in the non profit financial arena.
    • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and Coastal Conservation League’s board of directors; prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting.
    • Coordinate all audit activities.
    • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed.
    • Oversee cash, investment, and asset management.


    Strategic Planning and Leadership

    • Work closely with the Executive Director and senior leaders to develop and implement strategic plans and goals.
    • Support the Audit & Finance, as well as the Investment Committees, collaborating with committee leaders and members to provide strategic financial guidance and support
    • Provide strategic recommendations to the Executive Director based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
    • Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships.

     

    Budgeting and Forecasting

    • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
    • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets.
    • Develop financial business plans and forecasts.
    • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team.
    • Engage the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
    • Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials, etc.
    • Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
    • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functions;
    • Oversee the finance department; providing leadership and mentorship to the finance team, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
    • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
    • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and Coastal Conservation League’s board of directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

    Tax Filing and Compliance

    • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns.
    • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.


    Facilities and IT Operations

    • Manage the organization’s physical infrastructure, offices, and system maintenance (phone system, security, cleaning, supplies, etc.), with assistance from one office administrator.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Authorities:

    • Responsible for developing and directing the organization's finances.

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related financial degree
    • At least 7-10 years of relevant experience
    • Supervisory experience
    • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel
    • Hands-on experience with accounting and financial management software (e.g., Financial Edge)

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Advanced degree (i.e. Masters or PhD) in a related field, such as a Master’s in Business Administration
    • Proven work experience as a CFO, preferably in a nonprofit organization
    • Understanding of conservation work in South Carolina
    • CPA certification
    • Experienced in several software platforms; previous experience with conversion and/or implementation of common accounting software packages is desirable.
    • Prior experience working with non-profit, for-profit, and commercial retail sectors is desirable.

    The position operates in a professional office environment located in Charleston, SC.
