Chief MRI Technologist oversees work in the magnetic resonance department, maintains technical aspects of radiologic safety and evaluates accuracy and quality of MRIs. May perform duties of MRI Technologist as needed. Additionally, Chief MRI Technologist may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Requires a registration as a technologist by the A.R.R.T. Typically reports to a manager or director. The Chief MRI Technologist manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Chief MRI Technologist typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Reviews patient scheduling procedures with the Unit Clerk and handles any changes to preparation sheets.
    • Performs MRI procedures diagnosis of illness or injuries. Participates in cross-training activities in different modalities as required to support the departments' needs, to include, but not limited to, General radiology.
    • Schedules patients for routine radiographic, Ultrasound, CT studies and Mammographic examinations utilizing provided protocol both inside and outside this facility.
    • Accurately & responsibly requests, registers, modifies and edits case study data utilizing the Resource & Patient Management System (RPMS) software and strives to maintain the integrity of this Radiology Information System (RIS) database while participating in the training of providers and other users in the proper use of the RPMS radiology package.
      Consults with Providers as may be required.
    • Performs clerical functions required of the service.
    • Maintains a neat, clean, and orderly MRI trailer/room and patient areas.
    • Evaluates new products and equipment for possible future purchases.
    • Researches, develops and formulates new techniques and procedures for use in the MRI Department.
    • Utilizes Picture Archive & Communication (PAC's) system hardware & software in the manipulation and routing of digital imagery in accordance with departmental protocol.
    • Maintains PACs system integrity by recognizing and troubleshooting system failures within the telecommunications environment. Consults with Radiologists as required facilitating accurate readings of digital image from inception through reporting.
    • Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to the department supervisor those which would improve the operation of the radiology section.
    • Recognizes and reports or initiates maintenance requests of malfunctioning or intermittently failing equipment in accordance with established protocol. Participates in departmental QA/QC programs and technique development programs.
    • Participates in Performance Improvement activities, keeps abreast of the latest and current technical literature and maintains accreditation through continuing education.
    • Participates in any or all required activities in support of the mission statement, performance contracts and Medical Imaging Program. Keeps abreast of changes through annual review of the hospitals Safety, Infection Control, and Policies & Procedure Manuals. Attends/participates in all mandatory training as prescribed by hospital administration.
    • Excels at explaining procedures and protocols. Shows initiative and offers to train others. Presents pertinent information to staff after attending workshops and seminars. Takes responsibility of own educational requirements and exceeds the required.
    • Assumes responsibility for quality control activities which include, but are not limited to, making minor adjustments to equipment such as setting up step wedges and when necessary changing transverse length adjusters.
    • Performs daily-required calibration tests and recording appropriate equipment errors in the log.
    • Recognizes equipment malfunctions, contacts appropriate MRI Service Engineer describes problem and communicates the engineer's response to supervisor and other technologists. After repair of equipment, incumbent verifies that the Service Engineer has performed post repair quality control tests, which indicate that the equipment is operating in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and standards.
    • Assists the Radiology department in developing, establishing, and monitoring techniques and procedures fundamental to instituting and maintaining a Radiographic Quality Control program through, (1) Processor monitoring and control, (2) Monitoring equipment performance, and (3) monitoring accessory equipment. The incumbent is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and updating a policy and procedure manual for this specialized area of the Branch of Radiology Services.
    • Practices sterile technique and prevents cross-contamination in various examinations. Ensures that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters and other required equipment are present and laid out.
    • Maintains integrity of patient records within the hospital PACS computer system, creates CD copies of exams as requested, quality assurance records, current operating policy manuals and other materials as necessary to insure adequate patient treatment and referral as necessary.
    • Keeps repair and maintenance records of the radiographic unit.
    • Participates in projects and assists in the development and implementation of procedures and policies.
    • Procures stores and routes supplies for room preparation, recommends the procurement and necessity for maintenance and servicing of equipment.
    • Maintains patient & employee privacy by following all Departmental, Organizational, Security Act & HIPAA protocols for the handling of all requests for release of information.
    • Assists the Radiology Technologist when time and workload permits.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience:

    • Three (3) years of direct work experience.

    Education:

    • Radiology Certification from an AMA accredited school of Radiology Technology.

    Licensure:

    • State Certification in Diagnostic Radiology.
    • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
    • Licensed in Radiography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).
