Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages daily planning, operations, and staff of a medical library to meet the information needs of users. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, and students. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) possess broad and current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. The purpose of this position is to provide reference assistance to students in person, and remotely by using online databases and/or printed resources. This individual will staff the Reference Desk, provide outreach planning and implementation, and/or by leading Library Instruction sessions to classes and groups as needed.
Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science.
Knowledge of the library reference interview.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of library instruction.
Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.
Three (3) years experience giving reference assistance to students at the undergraduate level.
Three (3) years experience teaching library instruction at the undergraduate level.

Staff the Reference Desk as scheduled, assist library patrons by answering reference questions and assisting with search strategies
for print or online resources.
Provide Library instruction to classes, customizing the content of the instruction to the class.
Provide Outreach services, both planning and implementation, to market the Library and
increase the College and Community’s awareness of the Libraries’ mission.
Night and/or weekend shifts may be assigned.
