Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages daily planning, operations, and staff of a medical library to meet the information needs of users. Oversees professional and support staff involved in cataloging, indexing, issuing books/materials, and keeping records of items on loan. Being a Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) selects books and publications for purchase and subscribes to pertinent periodicals as allowed for by the given budget. Responds to more complex requests from faculty, medical staff, and students. Additionally, Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) possess broad and current knowledge of medical developments and scientific literature. Requires a master's degree in library science. Typically reports to a director. The Chief Medical Librarian (MLS) manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager.     Description

    The Health Sciences Librarian provides research, curriculum and clinical support to faculty, researchers, and students. This individual will provide assistance with bibliographic instruction, reference, collection development, and other professional librarian duties.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage the library in the absence of the Director. This includes supervising, training, and monitoring student workers.
    • Provide liaison librarian services to students, faculty, and staff in the Health Sciences. Liaison services include instruction programs using traditional classroom and active learning methods, consultation, and literature searching, among other activities.
    • Provide one-on-one teaching sessions and specialized search assistance; build relationships with Health Sciences faculty, staff, and students that support all research endeavors. Assist library patrons with reference and informational needs. Provide copyright guidance, following best practices and utilizing Copyright Clearance Center.
    • Develop outreach activities and communication to promote library programming, resources, and services. Provide updates and monitor social media accounts such as Facebook and Instagram. Serve on library, university, and professional committees.
    • Create and develop LibGuides, instructional materials, and web tutorials for the library website. Record and edit tutorials on screencast software.
    • Responsible for interlibrary loans including: searching, requesting, tracking; processing all orders; returning all loaned items and communicating with borrowers. Monitors, reconciles, and audits the Electronic Fund Transfer Service (EFTS) account.
    • Assist Director with Health Sciences collection development. Assess relevance and potential application/utility of new and updated health sciences and medical databases. Collect usage statistics and conduct assessment regarding current and future library needs.
    • Manage the process of acquiring new materials for the collection. Evaluate, document, and process new resources. Oversees the ordering and receipt of library materials in all formats and media.
    • Reviews and implements collection management and weeding policies.
    • Attend professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; read professional literature; attend and participate in staff meeting discussions.
    • Complete special projects and tasks.

    The library staff works as a team for some tasks in the library. They include the following:

    • Binding includes tasks such as preparing Thesis and Faculty Books, bindery shipments, maintaining bindery records, and processing bound volumes.
    • Circulation includes tasks such as maintaining circulation records, checking material into and out of the library, and preparing overdue notices.
    • Course Reserve Material includes such tasks as maintaining and updating current course reserve resource lists, recalling, locating and making materials available for course reserves. Processing items, activating and running appropriate reports.
    • Cataloging includes preparing bibliographic records using bibliographic utilities, and ordering and processing new acquisitions.
    • Exhibits/Displays includes developing and arranging new exhibits for library displays.
    • Proctoring includes coordinating study rooms for faculty to schedule and administer exams for students in the library.
    • Other duties as needed.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Required:

    The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

    • Library ethics and professional standards.
    • Experience teaching library instruction sessions.
    • Ability to work well in a team environment.

    Preferred:

    • Proficiency with search techniques across a variety of health sciences and biomedical resources such as in-depth experience with PubMed and Clinical Key.
    • Has basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, and experience using content management software such as LibGuides. ILL systems such as DOCLINE, vendor management systems such as EBSCO/GOBI, and SirsiDynix or other Library Management Systems.
    • Keeps current of all new technological processes, trends, equipment, and information resources of the Internet and other electronic databases.
    • Certification with Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP)

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    • Masters degree in Library Science (M.L.I.S.) or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school.
    • Two to four years of relevant experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
