Being a Chief Medical Officer oversees the implementation of quality improvement efforts designed to improve clinical performance and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other regulations and standards. Evaluates developments and innovations in medical care and makes recommendations for new practices and procedures. Additionally, Chief Medical Officer advises CEO and medical teams on matters impacting patient care. Requires a MD. Requires State License to Practice Medicine. Typically reports to top management. The Chief Medical Officer manages a business unit, division, or corporate function with major organizational impact.     Department Overview

    JOB SUMMARY:Responsible to work with physicians, other clinicians and senior leaders to create a care delivery system that supports ongoing improvement resulting in highly reliable outcomes. Leads in a manner where clinicians enjoy a work environment that is collegial and supports exceptional clinical outcomes with patients acknowledging the receipt of such that is documented via 3rd party surveys. 

     

    The CMO works to eliminate preventable harm by developing organization-wide support of safety and quality concepts through transparency, collaboration, and mutual learning. The CMO will develop as necessary and oversee a systems approach to delivery of clinically appropriate care.  The CMO will enhance clinician alignment by requesting input in key decisions, developing physician leaders and the use of forums and structures in a manner that supports a systems approach to care delivery. 

     

    The CMO will create highly utilized processes such that the overhead related to auditing quality across KH will diminish materially as highly reliable processes are adopted and errors eliminated.  And the CMO will work with appropriate leaders within KH to develop a ten year physician workforce plan and evaluate how best to modify and/or strengthen GME programs, specialties and residency slots to support the needs of the community and KH.

    Responsibilities & Requirements

    Outcome Objectives:

    • Supports the continuation and strengthening of an environment that attracts top tier physicians – who desire a collegial and learning environment, who want their time valued, who know where and how to give input to improve care and desire to make a meaningful contribution to community health improvement and Mission Fulfillment for KH.
    • Clinical Care Standardization
      • Uses appropriate forums to develop and rapidly adopt clinical care standardization and improvement mechanisms for inpatient, ambulatory and clinic settings.
      • Develop and implement strategies to ensure highly reliable outcomes leading to positive reported public rankings.
    • Responsible for assessing and improving safety and quality across the system through identification and implementation of best practices to reduce harm with a focus on Patient Safety Indicators and Hospital Acquired Conditions.
    • Leads in a manner that extols the Faith Based Mission of Kettering Health so that clinicians have an interest in fully supporting the concepts of holistic care.
    • Aides the President of Acute Care in evaluating how to optimize the use of physician resources including: Medical Directors, Hospital based physician contracts, independent physician contracts, call schedules and Medical Group resources. Additionally develops long term plans with appropriate input to align the GME programs and residency slots to align with community and KH needs.

     

    Data Management:

    • Maintains a resource that is an expert on trends, clinical outcomes and benchmarking including payer requirements, publicly reported data and the regulatory environment.
    • Oversees creation of metrics/dashboards to ensure relevant information is available.
    • Monitors key measures to determine areas of focus.
    • Ensures compliance with payor reporting and attains incentives for quality goals set by payors.

     

    Care Continuum (Populations Health):

    • Owns achievement of key IP metrics, such as LOS, and Readmissions. Ensures KH has appropriate preferred provider relationships/contracts with Skilled Nursing Facilities to create ease of care transitions.
    • Actively participates in the KH clinically integrated network and seeks to align incentives between the KH medical group, KH hospitals and independent physicians.
    • Collaborates with community partners to develop strategic relationships to support processes to address social determinants of health.

     

    Clinical Informatics

    • Provides oversight and direction to prioritize and select technologies that support delivery of exceptional care and create value.
    • Responsible for creating optimized workflows for clinicians.

     

    Fiscal Responsibility

    • Partners with the Medical Group to reinforce the KH objective of providing consumer focused care via easy access and easily navigated care paths. Works with the medical group to achieve a level of service that primary care is profitable and includes virtual care, scheduled in person, on demand, and urgent care.  Commits to finding solutions that minimize the nonsense related to clinical and hospital practice, highlight the professional aspects of care that create meaning and purpose for the clinicians and value for the consumer/patients which result in a growing organization that optimizes the investment returns for the work done by these professionals. 

                 

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education: Clinical Degree required: DO/MD

     

    Experience: Minimum of 10 years as a senior clinical leader in a Health care system. Experience with change management and performance improvement required.  Strong collaboration skills.
